Long-overdue historic building renovation and modern additions near U Street. DC finally did something good with this giant eyesore.

Looks good now and performing but mid tier. Will newcomers to U Street come to this school?

Newcomers start out in a school like Meridian in the early grades. It happened at Ross overnight.

Well, is the ability to attract middle class families the be all and end all measure of success of a charter school? From Meridian's numbers (especially in middle school) it looks like they are doing some good work with a population that is not generally well served by DCPS. And their new building is beautiful.

Yes scores look pretty good and are increasing. Building is fantastic.

Details? Is this through the neighborhood association or something else?

I got to know the local construction team and went through Maggie at Forrester last week. MYUE@forresterconstruction.com.

Mayor Gray and the U Street political and education crowd will be there.

Exactly. There are a LOT of families who already live in the Columbia Heights neighborhood and could use a good option. I predict that the Hispanic population is going to grow a lot, and that tends to be a very word-of-mouth community.

I believe it's primarily for the parents but that neighbors are welcome. BTW, there are middle class white newcomers to the school in the early childhood grades and our kids are doing well. Most of you just haven't discovered it yet.

I posted a thread about Meridian a few weeks ago asking about the feasibility for middle class families. Talk about blow back...I'm definitely visiting and I hope it's a viable option for my soon to be 3 year old.

We are in PS3. My kid loves it and is thriving two weeks in. The principal is fantastic and the PS teachers have all been wonderful so far. If you call for a tour they will gladly oblige. Recommend highly that you try to meet Dr. Breedlove.
