| I know the year has just begun, but can those of you with kids there share how they like it so far? We're considering it for next year. Is your gut telling you that you made the right choice or is it just too soon to have any perspective? Honesty greatly appreciated here. Thanks! |
| So far, up to expectations and both DC and we are happy. |
| A lot of structure and procedure to keep things organized, our student's enjoying it so far. |

Great so far.
There have been a few logistical problems that the administration failed to foresee, but I've been very impressed with how quickly they move to solve the problem once it has been identified. If they see a problem in the morning, they send an employee to the hardware store, etc. to buy whatever is needed to solve the problem by the afternoon. |
The hardware store? I don't think hinges and nails are the types of things some of us are interested in hearing about. Some are considering this as a school for next year. I would assume the school admin can figure out how to change a lightbulb, I'm more interested in how the academics and social issues are progressing. |
| Haven't heard of any problems with social or academic issues thus far, our child only mentioned that there was a bit of extraneous talking that was going on in on one of his friend's classes early on, which now sounds like got sorted out. Really minor stuff on that front thus far, it's been pretty smooth and the kids thus far seem great. |
| Anyone have kids with ASD or ADHD attending? Are accomodations being met? How is special Ed coordinator? Very responsive, not very? I know Basis does not have recess (I'm gathering this is case in many MS) but do kids have any non structured breaks besides lunch? How many kids per class 5th grade)? Does anyone know when next parent info session is? I sent basis email with no response. |
I was providing just one example of their can-do attitude. If my post does not provide the sort of information you are interested in, you are free to ignore it and read those of others. |
| Op here - thanks for your "hardware store" post pp. I got what you were saying and it is valuable info. Thx to others for feedback also. How are kids handling homework so far? |
|
DC has IEP (ELL and speech) but I have yet to schedule a meeting with the special ed coordinator.
So far things have been alright for us. When I email teachers, I get a response within a few hours. It's been challenging for DC to take notes as teacher is talking, especially in history and economics since he has no experience whatsoever in this. We're coming from an expeditionary school where direct instruction was very minimal, and students spent most of the day on googledocs doing research, finding articles, then getting together in groups and writing long term projects. Basis is quite different as it is very structured, and I am quite optimistic our needs will be met once I meet with admin about DC's specific needs. |

It's way too early to tell, OP, and you should probably relax, if you are a prospective parent, and let it all play out. Four days tells you less than nothing about a school's potential. Or a child's potential.
(I find it hard to believe BASIS still needs its energetic beavers to start new BASIS threads every day. Dial back, beavers and let the school prove its excellence on its own merit.) |
| Children don't how to take notes anymore because they're too busy googling in class? What in the world? |
My DC has ADHD and is doing very well. I think the structure of the school is just what my DC needed. |
Hey, why not? For those of us interested, we have no other source of info. We don't know who's at this school, there are no alumni, no listserv, no directory, no 'school grounds' to mill about chatting with other parents, nothing on Great Schools, nothing on the Boosters website. How can you begrudge us this forum? If the thread has the word BASIS in it, that's your clue not to read it. |
