Beverly Farms ES

We are considering a move that would put us in this school district. I'm sure the school is overall good but I'm wondering if they have the same challenges as the rest of the county with the move to curriculum 2.0. Do kids under 2.0 get differentiation? Any pros/cons to the neighborhood that people would be willing to share? Is the school still under construction, and if so, when does it reopen on Post Oak? Thanks!

Here is the website for the school. It feeds to Hoover and Churchill. The neighborhood tends to be less pricey than others in Potomac.

Also the street is on is Postoak. The post and oak are together , not separate.

Ok, thanks. What about some of the neighborhoods over there off 7 Locks? Are people friendly?

We rented in that area and our neighbors were very friendly. There are a fair number of Jewish families. Be aware that the traffic on Seven Locks Rd is constant. We found the noise from the road to be a nuisance. You might find more info on the Regency Estates website (www.regencyestates.org).

Thanks for the tip, I took a look. So, if we're secular are we going to feel like oddballs?

Other schools in the Potomac area might be doing a better job with differentiation under 2.0. My child is in 3rd grade at Beverly Farms and the implementation of 2.0 (which began last year in 2nd grade) has been a disaster. My child keeps doing the same thing over and over and over in Math even though he passed these concepts in Kindergarten. In reading, they also don't challenge him and he is bored. There are no statistics to show how effective the curriculum is because the 3rd grade kids are the guinea pigs for the county.

At Beverly Farms, kids in 2.0 remain in the same classroom with the same teacher and same student population for the entire day. The teacher is responsible for doing the differentiation in the classroom but the reality is the teacher stops teaching kids once they are on grade level because that is all the new standard expects and the administration is not supporting the teacher with extensions. There are no textbooks or materials that come home to let parents know what their children are doing during the day. Our kids are supposedly assessed but the results are not communicated home to parents by the staff.

You may want to consider looking at Wayside, Potomac, Cold Spring, Bells Mills, or Seven Locks Elementary school districts. Beverly Farms is a terrible school to go to.

I honestly don't think that ANY school in MCPS is doing a good job with implementing 2.0.

At my child's school in Rockville, my 3rd grader is not switching teachers during the day for math. It's my understanding that staying in the same classroom for the entire day is part of 2.0. We're in the same boat as you - nothing is coming home with regards to assessments. No textbooks, etc. I also think that all of the MCPS kids in 3rd grade are the unfortunate "guinea pigs" with the implementation - last year rolled out in 2nd grade, this year rolled out in 3rd grade, next year rolled out in 4th. Fan-freaking-tastic!

Definitely not happening at Cold Spring but the Principal at Wayside philosphically has always supported students capable of advancement and acceleration. Not sure whether she is now muzzled with her hands tied behind her back because of the "spoken and unspoken" agenda behind curriculum 2.0.

Looking at the 3rd grade class rosters, I wonder if what they mean by differentiating at Beverly Farms is that they have assigned the kids with issues to one class, the grade level kids in another, and have one class for the "advanced" kids. It seems that my child has had almost entirely the same kids in his class since 1st grade. Previously, segregating kids and not having kids on multiple different levels in a classroom was viewed as discriminatory. Maybe MCPS's philosophy of diversity in the classroom has changed to accommodate the new curriculum.

One major disadvantage I see with keeping kids in the same classroom is that they only get to know and work with a small percentage of the kids in their grade. I see nothing in Curriculum 2.0 that doesn't allow for kids to go to one teacher for general math instruction and another teacher for general reading instruction. Sure the subjects are overlapping with science and social studies but the subjects could be covered more at the individual child's level with the pull out. Students could also have more opportunities to work on relationship skills (a goal of 2.0) with exposure to more of the student population during the day.

Many parents are taking their child out and putting them into private school for those reasons stated above.

This is pure anecdote. On another thread it says parents are all pulling their kids out of private school and enrolling them in BFES b/c of the new building. So unless you have facts to back this up, please don't spread rumors.

Maybe one set of parents is pulling their kids out of BFES to put them in private, and another set of parents is pulling their kids out of private to put them in BFES!

(But actually I think this is probably pretty unlikely.)

Pretty much so.

It is true. My child's best friend left for a private school on montrose road. There are plenty of kids from the jewish school being enrolled but at the same time there are kids who are leaving to go to private school. Please don't disregard the facts if you don't know for sure. I've been a parent in this community for more than 7 yrs and I think I know what I'm talking about.
