Snow day

Are the public sidewalks clear that lead to big schools? The public sidewalk along Burke Lake Road that leads to Lake Braddock Secondary School is not shoveled abd a sheet of hard snow/ice.

Are there any ice school parking lots?

The FedEx truck just got stuck on my side street on a sheet of thick ice. They Couldn’t turn around and completely blocked the road for about 20 minutes.

I can’t imagine it’s safe on the icy secondary roads for buses and bus stops, and that enough sidewalks are cleared for the 50K walkers.

I saw the bolded when I drove by there yesterday. Since sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owners, that's all on FCPS. They can't point the finger at VDOT for that one.

But it seems ridiculous that the high school and middle school teachers have totally checked out, not answering emails, posting nothing on schoology, not updating grades. Kids (those that care) could be using this time to catch up or study. I get it that lots won’t do that, but some will and it seems relatively low effort to just do the bare minimum like check your email.
Who is emailing their teacher during the 3-week break?

It was their vacation. They were actually being told *not* to check email by their admin during that time.

Yes and why the F! would any of us post work on Schoology that kids who ARE NOT IN SCHOOL won’t do. It’s like you just have to be punitive against someone, for some reason, whether it makes any sense to be or not.

Exactly, what would be posted to Schoology?

DD's teachers have been responsive to emails this week, and have been putting up content and sending messages through Schoology as well.

There are sidewalks that are not adjacent to personal property. This isn’t sidewalks that homeowners are responsible for. There are public sidewalks and it seems no one is responsible for them.

That is how the sidewalk is to Lake Braddock Secondary with tons of walkers. And it is not safe for them to walk on the busy Burke Lake Road. I know there are other sidewalks out there that walkers take that are not homeowner responsibility. Do you understand the difference?

How are the secondary roads? Still lots of ice/snow?

How are the school parking lots? Any that are really covered in snow/ice?

I saw lots of photos last night in Facebook groups.

This is the attitude that emerged during COVID from the teachers and when I lost faith in the school district. I get not answering emails on vacation. But this week is not vacation and my kids have been using the time to study for end of quarter tests. I just have average kids too, not AAP type kids. Bizarre. Any other job would expect people to at lest check email.

Ok, could you also see why some of the hate on the last 160 pages would be the reason why some teachers are not checking emails?

My junior has been working on a dual enrollment assignment with the teacher posting messages to the class and also meeting virtually with students today for feedback on said assignment. But not sure if they have to stay on a strict schedule since it's DE?

We shoveled our own street in front of our house. If everyone would go out and do a little, then the community would be in better shape. Yes, it takes hours and some chipping at the ice, but it is satisfying to see it cleared.

Ridiculous to be emailing teachers or to ask for anything to be posted to Schoology. If a MS or HS student wants to study, they can use the free FCPS tutor or go to one of a million sites for any subject matter they want. They can get ahead in class- every syllabus is posted on FCPS or they can learn entirely new subjects. If ES student, 5 days out of school won’t keep them from Harvard- just ask the kids at Harvard now that went through COVID no school and still got there.

Maybe it is school or teacher dependent. We are at a high school that has a terrible principal. That might be the difference.

I can picture some of what you are talking about, but the mass space of unshoveled walk on Burke Lake Road belongs to FCPS, doesn't it? I mean...it's touching the athletic field space (though there's fences there). If it's public doesn't it by definition belong to some part of the Fairfax County government?

I never anywhere in my PP said homeowners are responsible.

Are they taking it with NVCC credit? That could be why.

I have checked my email. No kids have emailed me because they aren’t in school!! All that’s there are all the cancellation emails. Our principals are not telling us to post instructional materials because these are not instructional days! I can’t hold kids responsible for content on NON-instructional days. I assume if the kids need enrichment they can read a book.

There might be less anger if emails were being checked, calendars and grades updated, etc. I was fine with the snow days and naively assumed the teachers would at least check in at the high school level. Silly me.
