Thanks very much for the heads-up about this -- and for making it easy to do something about it by posting those email addresses. I have already emailed all of them. I am a tax-paying resident of Fairfax County, and strongly object to having my tax dollars used to support any partisan rally at a public school.
These officials must not have gotten the memo that the demographics of their county have changed. I'm told that we Democrats outnumber the Republicans now. |
wow, that sux! I don't live in Fairfax but I find that alarming as well. It's a public school, it shouldn't give an impression that it is affiliated with a certain politician. |
Just announced on WAMU that it was moved. |
Robinson Secondary School (also in Fairfax Co.) hosted an Obama rally back in July. This is getting more press because school will be in session at the time of the rally. I don't really agree with the rally being held during the school day, but this is not just a Republican thing. |
I had no idea what the rules were on this kind of thing, so I googled. I had in my head that public places just had to give equal access (but I'm probably thinking about the media, not schools) But it looks like tax dollars aren't being spent; the school is being paid. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2008/09/09/politics/p094940D46.DTL&type=politics |
I emailed as well. This is a sad and shameful day for Fairfax. |
It is indeed "just a Republican thing." Facilitated by a Republican mayor. The policy says that political events shall not be held on school property while school is in session. The Obama rally complied. |
Thanks for the contact info. I wrote them an email.
If the Republican Mayor of Fairfax is making an exception to the McCain-Palin rally because he sees it as a learning opportunity for the students, will he provide an equal "learning opportunity" for the Obama-Biden team to express their views? |
Of course not. |
Both parties' candidates have rallies at schools all the time. It's common. |
This is false. There is a policy - as it is a PUBLIC school - that political rallies shall only be held while school is not in session. Please provide examples of other times when they violated their own policy. |
One of the best things I remember from high school in Massachusetts was when the candidates came to our school during school hours and held a town hall style meeting. Of course, this was when Carter was running for president (I'm old). However, I don't get what the problem is? It's a great experience for everyone, and I think the Obama people should do the same. |
The difference here is candidateS. This is a republican rally for McCain-Palin. It's not a debate. It's not a town hall meeting. That's what the problem is. The Obama people would not be permitted to do the same as long as the mayor of Fairfax is who he is. Pathetic. |
I didn't say they have them while school is in session. I said they hold them at public schools. |
