If the Republican Mayor of Fairfax is making an exception to the McCain-Palin rally because he sees it as a learning opportunity for the students, will he provide an equal "learning opportunity" for the Obama-Biden team to express their views?

Of course not.

How can you know that? Have you asked him/her? I think this is just your opinion and has no basis in fact.

It is indeed "just a Republican thing." Facilitated by a Republican mayor. The policy says that political events shall not be held on school property while school is in session. The Obama rally complied.

Please reveal your source of this so-interesting policy.

Um, google it. It's no secret and not hard to find. The policy is also *quoted* in every single news article about this matter.

Of course, this was when Carter was running for president (I'm old). However, I don't get what the problem is? It's a great experience for everyone, and I think the Obama people should do the same.

The difference here is candidateS. This is a republican rally for McCain-Palin. It's not a debate. It's not a town hall meeting. That's what the problem is. The Obama people would not be permitted to do the same as long as the mayor of Fairfax is who he is. Pathetic.

This site is driving me nuts these days. Why are people so angry??? I know we all have different beliefs, but the hate and anger that has been displayed here since Palin was chosen as McCain's running mate is astonishing. And I bet Obama would be able to have a rally there as well even with a Republican mayor. The press would be too bad otherwise!

THANK YOU! Finally, someone puts it into words. What is wrong with everyone? Such hateful talk like she is the anti-christ or something. I personally like both of the candidates and their running mates. To me it's a win-win. I see alot of things to admire about the Obama campaign and alot of things to admire about the McCain campaign. The deal breaker for me will be what their economic promises sound like. And frankly, I can't believe that economics could make people so bitter and mean.

OP here. Here is the response I just got from a member of the school board. I have no idea what the other location is.

At the request of the McCain advance staff -- the McCain-Palin event
scheduled on Wednesday, September 10 at Fairfax High School will be moved to
another location. Neither the Field House nor the football stadium could
accommodate the expected number of attendees.

There SHOULD be things that get you riled up. Who is in charge of our country should be one of them. The laws that govern our actions, our bodies, our children, and our land should be another. And this particular thread has nothing to do with Palin. It's not bitter or mean to be truly and honestly afraid of what will transpire if McCain and Palin are elected. It's not bitter or mean to be opposed to someone who is against abortion even in cases of rape. It's not bitter or mean to be opposed to someone who will keep our sons and daughters in Iraq for the next 100 years. And it's not bitter or mean to be opposed to someone who seeks only to assist the wealthy. Expressing these thoughts isn't bitter or mean - it's AMERICAN.

I wrote to the school board immediately, and here is the reply I just received. I give them points for being responsive, but the rally wasn't cancelled out of any sense of right and wrong. Read on.

Dear Mrs.

Thank you for your e-mail.

At the request of the McCain advance staff -- the McCain-Palin event scheduled on Wednesday, September 10 at Fairfax High School will be moved to another location. Neither the Field House nor the football stadium could accommodate the expected number of attendees.

Please know I do appreciate your concern and your willingness to share your opinion.

Sincerely,
Janice Miller, Chairman
City of Fairfax School Board

I am a tax-paying resident of Fairfax County, and strongly object to having my tax dollars used to support any partisan rally at a public school.

These officials must not have gotten the memo that the demographics of their county have changed. I'm told that we Democrats outnumber the Republicans now.

Then call up GMU because they hosted Joe Biden not too long ago and the last I checked GMU was a public school receiving state money.

I am the 14:00 poster. I am not a huge Palin supporter by any means, but the way this board has gone off on her in the last couple of weeks is crazy. I agree with you that people need to get "riled up" about certain things that are important to them and this country. But the way people are going about it on this site - calling people losers and pathetic is uncalled for. We all live in this country and presumably we all want the best for ourselves, our children, and our country. But people are going to have different ideas about what that is, and of course there will be disagreements. I just wish people could go about discussing things in a more constructive way by listening to what everyone has to say and then responding thoughtfully without insulting someone or calling names. I guess I just feel like all the anger is really unhealthy - be passionate about what you believe in, but don't try to make other people feel bad if they believe something different than what you do.

Why is it crazy? This is a national contest to elect the 2 top officials in our country. They appoint cabinet members and supreme court justices. They make policy. They can veto legislation. These are all very important matters to me. I don't think I've ever in my life called someone a loser, and certainly do not try and make anyone feel bad for any reason. But it's ok to be passionate about things that matter - even if that involves getting angry. In my opinion, people getting angry has accomplished a tremendous amount in our country's history. Why are women so afraid of it?

And my apologies for everything being in a quote - it wasn't when I wrote it!

Maybe some are upset because the polls aren't showing the landslide that many on this site predict. Yesterday CNN gave Obama 44% McCain 43% and 13% undecided.

I think politics bring out the worst in people. They bash anyone who doesn't agree with them. Personally I am not quite decided. There are things that I like about both candidates, and hate about each.

Aren't the polls based on registered voters who voted in the last election? That's Obama's ace in the hole.

And what do you hate about Obama?

Much agreed--GET RILED UP. Your future depends on it.

And I think the Republicans have earned our anger; by accepting the Republican Party's nomination, McCain and Palin ARE the Republican Party, despite their efforts to hide Bush at the convention. They have had their chance for the past 7 years and they have turned things to sh*t. So, yes, people are damn entitled to get riled up.
