How can you say the proposed plans do quite nicely for central Arlington? Does anyone disagree that Ashlawn is getting hurt by the proposed plans???

Emphatically.

Then clearly you don't understand the impact of the proposed changes on the school and community. It will significantly change the student body and minimize diversity. At a school whose motto is "global citizenship" and being accepting of all differences. Turning Ashlawn into another NW school does hurt it.

DP. I understand your point, I’m just thoroughly over the “my school is more precious than any other” argument we’ve been hearing from so many school communities for years. Everyone thinks their own school community is special, but that’s not a compelling argument for anyone outside of it.

Ashlawn parent here, DP than above, but I think the post above that explains how it's not that we're special or deserve to be spared from.change, just that we too are affected and that should be acknowledged. Honestly, I think our community is impacted more than the McKinley community, and for that reason I'm pretty disgusted by their hysterics over all of this. It will suck for my kids if our school changes, but sometimes change happens and it sucks...Unlike what appears to be the perspective of the McKinley families, I just don't think I'm entitled to be spared from the change simply because it will be sad for me and our school.

Everyone is getting so wrapped up in where the option schools are moving that they are failing to realize that regardless of where they put the option programs, schools in the McK, Reed and Ashlawn areas were going to have massive changes to their school boundaries due to Reed opening and ASFS getting new boundaries. Even if they didn't move ATS to McK, the changes were coming. Also, as a SA parent, I'm really annoyed by all the people crying about the diversity leaving their school while they come home to their SFH in their all white neighborhood. If you want a diverse school, move to a diverse neighborhood!

Bingo. An awful lot of Ashlawn’s diversity comes from the Ashlawn tail, which people who actually live there have been complaining about for years due to the lack of proximity. All the people living in the predominantly white neighborhoods right around Ashlawn who are now complaining about losing their diversity are basically saying they want to override the needs and interests of those diverse families in favor of keeping them at Ashlawn so that the affluent white people don’t have to admit to the realities of their own choice to live in a predominantly white neighborhood.

Ashlawn buses in most of the diversity...global citizens from 2+ miles away? If you looked at a map you might have guessed things would change someday.

Of course, Ashlawn is going to see changes. It has a crazy boundary that doesn't make sense. The point (well one of them) of this process is to finally fix all the weird boundaries, which you can do if you do it all at once.

Let's hope they balance capacity across all the schools and fix the weird boundaries once and for all. Everyone should be looking at those things, not lamenting how your school will change. We will all see change with this process.

So is this a warning shot across the bow to the County that the schools will no longer attempt to hide the affects of their terrible housing policy that has been furthering segregation? If so, I can get on board.

The county doesn’t care. Get out of here with your “warning shot.”

Face it. Just about everyone who posts on DCUM is a self-centered asshole, but each in their own special way.

Certainly when it comes to potential school changes. This is far from a McKinley thing. In fact, there have been Nottingham posters throwing scorn at McKinley parents for years for not fighting hard enough for what they want, and telling them that they deserved the overcrowding they got. Plenty of a$$holery all around.

What? Nottingham parent here and I have never heard anyone tell McKinley that they deserved overcrowding. You're just trying to stir the pot. I don't understand why, other than maybe you're still trying to blame Nottingham.

No one deserves overcrowding and hopefully they will actually balance things this time around.

All sympathy for McKinley is officially gone.

The parts of McKinley that don’t go to Reed will not all go to Ashlawn. Some will get bussed to Tuckahoe and Nottingham.

The McK planning units closest to those schools can all walk to Reed, unless you mean the units south of 66 literally in McKs backyard.

Um, no, and I’m not even a McKinley parent; we live in the Discovery zone. There has been a lot of ugliness over the past few years, with gloating like this:

As a Mom with young children at Nottingham, I cannot say enough how grateful I am to the foresighted parents who were at Nottingham before us. Thank goodness they convinced APS staff to push Tuckahoe and Glebe planning units to McKinley rather than cascading up to Discovery and us.

I don’t know what to say about the selective memory, aside from maybe the comments didn’t even register with you? I’m not a member of either community, but even I can see that some of the current disparaging of McKinley is wildly hypocritical.
