Earlier start date proposed for MCPS

I am not going to detail everything but no, that isn't possible. MCSL runs a certain amount of weeks in the summer. My child then goes to sleepaway camp. The end of the summer is the only time for vacation. I had already put a lot of work into figuring out this schedule and this is the first year in the many years we've had kids in MCPS that the calendar has changed like this.

Your e-mail to the BOE will go like this:

Dear BOE,

I oppose starting school 3 days early next August, because then either my kid won't get to go to sleepaway camp or we won't get to take a family summer vacation.

Sincerely,

You

Sorry you don't care about a lost week of family time with your child, PP. Some of us do care, and don't have unlimited options for other time off.

Sleepaway camp is not family time, by definition.

It's the family vacation that can't occur bc there want sufficient notice.

Some families have to plan far in advance. I work at a company that does presentations. Summertime is very busy for us. If we are taking more than a day or two off, we had to submit PTO dates by the end of September.

If I had an inkling that this was up for debate, then I could have made our vacation a week earlier. But this appears to just come up, a mere 6 months before school is out.

I am already annoyed that MCPS refuses to abide by their snow contingency plan and are always asking for waivers...and now, they are making a somewhat significant change to their schedule a few this late in the game?

My sister lives in Anne Arundel county and they adjusted their start date, but the decision was made and everyone notified before the school year started this year. How is that for planning?

MCPS is run by a bunch of bozos and yes, I am sending an email to them.

Teacher here: I'm pissed at this recommendation to start in the middle of a week and a week earlier. I will need to find an additional week of child care for 3 kids because I can't afford to live in Montgomery County. In other words, it will cost me around a thousand dollars so I will just use 2 of my sick days to start out the year.

This might be the last straw for me in terms of the absolute ineptitude of this "leadership". It's a joke.

The vote is in the morning so this is the last chance to email!

To 17:33, I feel your pain on the PTO schedule.

Can you request an adjustment week to your PTO? I am also scrambling to adjust our vacation dates as well. It is not easy.

I thought the state recommended they start after Labor Day to help the economy!

Maybe someone should tell Franichot and he can contact the BOE

No. This was only recommended by Peter Franchot personally and by Ocean City.

This calendar is bad - they should start from the last draft, cut one of the preservice days, cancel the Innauguration Day Holiday, and call it a day. The November and March shifts are bad, in addition to the unpleasantly early mid-week start.

What's the change in March?

They have split a professional day off of spring break, and moved it 1 week earlier into March.

I hadn't even noticed the March change. I did mention November in my email though.

I guess we will have to wait and see whether the Board heard us.
