Big GDS news

``Read the prior posts about the real history of the Giant. Giant and its parent, Royal Ahol, walked away from an agreement negotiated with Mayor Williams, the Office of Planning and community groups in 2003-04 to build a new store.

(As for Giant, it will be big and new but alas it will always remain a "crappy" grocery chain.)''

I did read them. I lived them. I watched people use ``design'' issues to stop it. Some people knee jerk oppose development. I'm not one of them.

The City Paper's Housing blog, when written by Lydia DePillis, was non-stop snark, biased for the "smart-growth" lobby and not very accurate. She no longer works at the City Paper. Try going back to the Northwest Current sometime for extensive coverage going back some years. It's all on line.

And the ANC, as an elected body, is the voice of the neighborhood....

In name only. That has changed recently, but historically, the ANCs were reserved for people who had a specific axe to grind or for their mental therapy.

The Giant demonstrated that the ANC, or at least certain Commissioners, were very out of touch with their constituents.

Yes, I couldn't agree more. The ANC endorsed Cathedral Commons in the end, subject to various conditions. The zoning board only heard the endorsement, ignored the conditions, and the ANC members' constituents were very upset as a result at the ANC screw-up.

Any time you have extreme views, as wwas the case with the Giant in CP, your opponent exploits them as a weakness. Because a small group of people wanted no development at all, the neighborhood split and the developers got a bigger project than they ever hoped for.

Another good reason to look at the Georgetown Day School purchase as a blessing. Who needs another town center on Wisconsin Avenue?

A blessing to a few NIMBYs.
