Brown was one of seven universities to reject the 'Compact' proposal, citing concerns that it would restrict academic freedom and institutional autonomy.

Brown University President Christina Paxson formally declined the invitation to join the "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education" in an October 15, 2025, letter to federal officials.

In her statement, she noted that while the university had reached a separate agreement with the Trump administration in July to restore research funding, the proposed compact did not offer the same intellectual protections as that prior deal.

Brown's rejection followed similar action by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which was the first school to publicly turn down the compact.

Other institutions that also rejected the proposal include the University of Southern California (USC), the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), Dartmouth College, the University of Virginia (UVA), and the University of Arizona.

The compact outlined a number of policy changes in exchange for "multiple positive benefits," including potentially more federal grant money, which critics argued would tie funding to political ideology rather than merit.

Probably means someone recognized his gait or voice.
