Someone commented to me that across multiple areas we're witnessing the collapse of a top-down driven command way of doing things, whether the media or advertising or movies. It was not market forces that demanded body positive advertising or mixed race advertising or dull movies with perfect race blind casting and girlbosses harpies, but ideology in boardrooms. And it turned out to be a money loser.

A heavy person in teen clothes is never going to sell. Pretending a heavy person can be sexy is command driven ideology. And that's why the progressives are freaking out. A sexy, attractive woman or man sells. Big time. I'm a gay dude and I can see exactly why the Sidney Sweeney ad is fun and enjoyable, and yes, sexy. I'm not offended by it (contrary to the previous poster screeching that LGBT+whatever would be offended by it). If there's anything "gay" in my admiration for the ad it's the aesthetics. And I don't doubt a lot of teens will lap this up because it's sexy and fun and full of implications of having a confident good time.

All the screechers are the modern equivalent of agony aunts clutching their pearls and moaning oh won't someone think of the children!

Spot on.

The people freaking out about the ad are the ones slowly realizing that they can’t compel belief. They can compel a lot of things by using the system to their advantage, but they cannot compel a personal belief, and slowly understanding that is causing them to rage.

This has the be the dumbest take. At no point has sex not sold and been used in advertising campaigns. Just because companies also try to appeal in other ways as well, doesn’t mean the sex has gone away.

This ad campaign is alarming because clearly AE and Sydney Sweeney looked at this campaign and realized it would be controversial and that a lot of people would see it as a white supremacist dog whistle. They then decided to go ahead with the campaign. We are a country where a major movie star and companies view being seen as friendly to white supremacists as an asset. And it’s not just the libs who see the white supremacy. Clearly, the MAGA folks see it. They just think that it’s right and just, and the libs are ridiculous for not supporting white supremacy.

I’m not sure how you ever get through your days functionally with this level of hyper-sensitivity. I’m actually pretty curious. Do you function normally? Have a job that requires hard work?

The MAGA hypocrisy propaganda machine is absolutely bonkers. People say something that MAGA disagrees with and they’re hyper-sensitive and overreacting. Meanwhile, the MAGA propagandists feed a constant diet of outrage to the MAGA-ites. They can spin out over Starbucks cup, being wished Happy Holidays, and lies about stolen elections, but express concern about the rising influence of white supremacy in this country? Clearly unhinged. Srsly, I’m just capable of rational thought and able to point out hypocrisy when I see it.

I’m a Democrat who desperately wants to win a national election again and who despises Trump, and there is literally nothing rational whatsoever about your hyperventilating about an ad for jeans featuring an attractive woman. You are equivalent to MAGA in your lack of rationality, in fact.

I’m more bothered by the way she talks in that stupid ad. Whyyyyy do so many young women talk like this?!?!?

Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, advocated and lobbied for eugenics. In fact, her basis for founding planned parenthood was her belief in eugenics.

And it would be celebrated if it was a Tans model. Right? That would make it cool and edgy. Applauded.

I do think the reference to good genes with a model who looks like a poster child for the Nazis is uniquely eyebrow raising. Honestly, if it were a non-white model, it would hit differently because of the lack of association with historical eugenics beliefs/Nazism. If it were that or a bunch of different (all hot) models with at least one non-white model? I don't think the dog whistle would be there.

All that said, I don't think there's anything offensive about the ad per se. However, I think it's in poor taste given historic realities and I *absolutely* wonder about the folks who green lit it, because I cannot imagine no one picked up on it at all.

OP: Posts link to ad no one has even seen, asks "am I the only one who doesn't understand why this is controversial?"
Group A: watch ad, reply "yes I can see why it's a problem," explains historic parallels
Group B: watch ad (or don't), reply "you're a woke mob who don't like that white, blonde haired blue eyed women are the true beauty standard, hahaha this is why you'll always lose you're jealous and old and fat and have brown hair!"
You: Why is Group A "having a tantrum"?

The accurate use of the word “bubble” to describe a board consisting of spectacularly out of touch, mostly white, wealthy, liberal women who were all convinced Harris would easily win (when it was obvious early on she would not) is now “MAGA” in your persecution dreams? You people are so lost.

New poster who agrees. You all look ridiculous having a tantrum over a jeans ad - just as maga does over “happy holidays.”

Yep.

Sydney Sweeney is sexy. The clothes she's wearing is besides the point. It's what ads for teen clothes used to be like till recently.

Sure you are

Independent

DCUM is the most ridiculous bubble.

As I said, sure you are

The accurate use of the word “bubble” to describe a board consisting of spectacularly out of touch, mostly white, wealthy, liberal women who were all convinced Harris would easily win (when it was obvious early on she would not) is now “MAGA” in your persecution dreams? You people are so lost.

No, no, and no

I live in MAGA land

And I saw the propaganda that was being pushed.

I also live among large numbers of another ethnicity who were being sent flyers implying that a Senator of the U.S. was being directed by her husband to vote pro Israel.

So much manipulation of very stupid people all around
