No. Basis’ charter does not allow any criteria for entry so no GPA. No backfilling. No. |
Person you are responding to is a troll. Took me like 3x to figure it out. |
Isnt Basis losing per student funding every higher grade because they don't backfill? I thought school funding was based on the number of students on count day. So it seems weird that any school would not backfill. |

No, BASIS simply adjusts the number of 5th and 6th grade spots they make available based on the number of 9th graders who re-enroll. If more 9th grade students re-enroll than expected, fewer 5th grade spots are made available in the spring and summer. If fewer 9th grade students enroll, more 5th grade spots are made available in the spring and summer.
The system isn't an exact science, but it works pretty well to ensure that seats are filled. However, arguably, there's a downside to losing somewhere between 40 and 50% of the 5th graders and 6th who enrolled before 9th grade. The high school could probably offer a better academic and social experience is more of the younger students stayed. |
| Correct. |
+1 I will say also that if there’s a grade where cumulative attrition is very high your high schooler can have a very small grade. Some kids don’t mind, some do. |
Sort of. Here are the number of seats filled at BASIS DC or the last 6 years: -135 (this year) -150 (really 135) + 4 6th graders -135 -135 + 6 6th graders + 1 8th grader -140 + 2 6th graders -120 |
