| I haven't had the ultrasound yet. The nurse told me the purpose was to confirm the pregnancy is in the uterus. Is that all? It seems kind of odd given that it is very very likely it is in the uterus. Are they looking for something else? It will be too early for a heartbeat for sure. |
| How far along? |
The first u/s is generally around 6.5 weeks and you can - or should - be able to see the heartbeat. They are also ensuring you don't have something called blighted ovum where a sac develops, but no embryo (though your body still produces HCG). |
| I will be 4.5-5 weeks when I have the ultrasound but I understand that my RE does it for everyone around the time they hit 2000. |
Dominion does it when you hit 2000, which is well before 6.5 weeks. |
|
As someone who just went through an ectopic, I can assure you that it is not always in the uterus. There is about a 2% chance that it is elsewhere and you want to make sure to catch it before it causes damages to your tubes.
Good luck! |
I'm sorry to hear that, PP. I realize that it isn't always in the uterus but they don't do pre-heartbeat ultrasounds for women in the OB's office, right, and those women could also have an ectopic or molar pregnancy. I guess I'm just unsure what it is about being in an RE's office that leads to this ultrasound and what the entire purpose is. |
| I had a pre-heartbeat ultrasound in the OB's office. It was at about 6 weeks or so. |
What was the purpose? |
| To see where the pregnancy was (in the uterus or elsewhere) and to see if they could see a fetal pole and sac. |
That's not standard in most practices. Did they have a specific reason to do it with you? Did you know when you ovulated for sure? |
|
I do know for sure when I ovulated, and I don't think they didn't have a specific reason. I have had 2 miscarriages in the past, but I also have a 2 year old, so I have successfully carried to term. They told me they didn't expect to see a heartbeat, so I shouldn't be worried about the lack of one.
Do you not want an ultrasound that early, or are you just curious why they want to do it? |
| 11:52, mostly I am curious, although I'm also curious about the cost! |
| That makes sense. I was (and am) hyper nervous so any chance to see if an embryo was there was okay with me. |
| For me, Dominion scheduled my ultrasound when I hit 2,000 one week later (so I think I was about 6 weeks). Purpose was for everything described above and they also saw heartbeat. |
