Movement on waitlists in August

Anonymous
Just wondering if any waitlisted families have been contacted at this late date?

Bump...anyone?
Anonymous
Apparently not.

Anonymous
Yes but not disclosing where but a "big 3" school last week.
Anonymous
Yes. Not disclosing where, not a big 3 school. It does happen.

How about just posting the grade?

Don't feel bad! Maybe this movement wasn't for K. Maybe they needed another girl to keep the ratio balanced. There are many, many reasons another child could have been chosen over yours that have nothing to do with your son personally. FWIW, this was a really tough year for boys entering K. There must have been a boy baby boom 5 years ago in this city!

Taking a kid from the waitlist is typically an institutional-advancement decision. Qualification etc means little. Wait-list places are most likely to go to large donors, or diversity-recruits for whom funding had not yet been established, or sibs for whom there was not a space when the school wants to retain an entire family. At most privates, the wait-list isn't really intended for "just-missed" applicants; it's not like Yale.

PP, are you just offering a guess on how things work? It wasn't clear, but seems you must be. Unless you are ready to claim you've worked in the admissions office of several local private schools, and been privy to admissions discussions, I don't see how you can make that claim with any credibility at all. I've been pretty involved with the admissions process at my child's school for several years now, I'm friends with many of the admissions people, and I receive no info whatsoever on who makes the waitlist or how it's used.

[Non-responsive to OP, but a tangent, so pls skip if only need quick answer]

I have no insider knowledge but the comment below comports with what I've seen at DC's private over the years (not a big 3, but a big ... 6?). The surprise kids that "we" didn't know about at the end of last school year -- and btw, you DO know of most of them if you care enough to attend new-family-admit socials -- have all, to a person, been either an URM or rich and from out of state. Never middle class from out of state, but big silicon valley VC or Wall St money from NYC or SF. If not clearly wealthy, then the child has an obvious trait that added to the definition of forming a diverse class. And I hesitate to say this, but it's always an obvious, wear-on-your-sleeve trait. Not a 'my mother is from Argentina and I don't speak one work of Spanish' Hispanic. But something clear to the naked eye. I'll leave it at that.
