I have no insider knowledge but the comment below comports with what I've seen at DC's private over the years (not a big 3, but a big ... 6?).  The surprise kids that "we" didn't know about at the end of last school year -- and btw, you DO know of most of them if you care enough to attend new-family-admit socials -- have all, to a person, been either an URM or rich and from out of state.  Never middle class from out of state, but big silicon valley VC or Wall St money from NYC or SF.  If not clearly wealthy, then the child has an obvious trait that added to the definition of forming a diverse class.  And I hesitate to say this, but it's always an obvious, wear-on-your-sleeve trait.  Not a 'my mother is from Argentina and I don't speak one work of Spanish' Hispanic.  But something clear to the naked eye.   I'll leave it at that.
