Women's Gymnastics ponytails

Why does every female gymnast pull her hair back in that intense ponytail? It looks like they've pulled their hair out.

And I want to know why the Russian gymnasts (actually, it's mostly Aliya, not so much Viktoria) sparkle the hell out of everything. Aliya had sparkly hair and a sparkly face. Every time they showed a close-up of her big, red eyes, I figured her eyes were irritated from all the make-up glitter that surely must have been flaking into her eyes.

She's lovely and a kick-ass gymnast, but all that eye irritation (that's what it looked like to me) cannot have helped her performance.

And why do they get hair cuts where they know they will have to pull their hair in a pony tail and use a hundred little barrettes to keep every stray hair in place. Seeing those little barrettes all over their head drive me nuts!

Ponytails keep hair out of the way and firmly in place during the competition. Is that really hard to understand?

But Nadia Comanece didn't have plastered down hair. Kerri Strug didn't have plastered down hair.

To be fair, Nadia and Keri had ugly haircuts. Some girls like to look pretty when they aren't doing a full back double layout.

the russians have glitter because they are strippers in the making.

keep in mind that many of these girls are not yet ovulating so they have not yet developed the thick hair yet.

Alternately, why do some of them have such long hair that they can't wear them in a normal ponytail or bun? (Aly Raisman, I'm talking to you.)

OOOOH I didnt think about that. I just wonder....if any of the girls get their periods. Can you imagine having to do all those flips/jumps and stuff on your period? The must have such low body fat they they dont get their periods....right.

OMG people, these are 16 year old girls. How many of you had your look together at that age?

this is really not new, people. Gymnasts have almost always pulled their hair back from their faces. What is new is the folded ponytail - wtf? Why are they no longer doing the buns as they did in the past?

Kerri Strug had a freaking mom cut! She couldn't even have achieved a ponytail and there was no need since her hair was so short it couldn't get in her face.
