Lafayette/Bucknell vs Nescacs

This thread moved on from OP's question about Lafayette a long time ago, but i consider Lafayette's location in Easton a plus. Easton is increasingly charming, growing, a decent size (30K people), walkable from Lafayette, and fairly safe (lower crime rate than PA and the national average). As part of the third largest metro area in PA (bigger than say Charleston or Savannah or Portland ME), and one of the most prosperous parts of PA (outside Philly, Pburgh and the capital), it offers access to virtually everything a student might reasonably need or want (but sorry DCUM, no Vuitton). And it's just a 90 bus to Manhattan or Philly, and a short drive to the Jersey shore or the Poconos.

Compared to colleges located in small towns of a few thousand (and one pizzeria), or a 3+ hour drive from the nearest metro area -- which would include Bucknell and quite a few NESCACs -- I'd consider Lafayette's location a lot better. Don't be dissuaded by DCUM's reflexive dislike of anyplace that's older than Mosaic or Pike and Rose.

People don’t ever jump into these threads to disparage a school like Skidmore, for example. The prestige whores and SLAC haters just want to make sure that schools like Middlebury and Hamilton know their place. “Just so you know, you are not elite, or lack sufficient clout.” Every thread about SLACs invariably devolves into this. Only in that it’s a school that hardly ever gets discussed on this board despite drawing a fair amount of kids, relatively speaking, from the region. It’s “ranked” higher than some NESCACs and in the same part of the country. People just don’t feel the need to gatekeep excellence or worth with that school.

All it takes is a few. Holy Cross was also pretty ignored on this board until a year or two ago. It was not getting enough attention — just as Skidmore is not getting enough attention now.

Skidmore's endowment is not very strong for the number of students it has.

I was debating with someone who was obsessed with the value of a HC business degree. HC isn't even on my radar, but I assumed there is one, because most of its peer schools have one. Sorry I didn't fact check them. It makes them sound even dumber.

Holy Cross is a SLAC. Most of its peers do not have a business degree. Don’t make any more assertions, because you are just sounding dumber.

Its peers are fellow Catholic schools. Villanova has a business degree. BC has a business degree. Fordham has a business degree. Fairfield has a business degree.

Skidmores endowment is pretty solid. It is not in the range of the elite schools which are a focus on DCUM but it is solid.

He has about a 50/50 shot at getting into Colgate and BC with his GPA and 1500 SAT according, again, to his Naviance.

Be careful. Holy Cross took a downswing for about 10-20 years (used to be more prestigious before then) and is making a comeback, especially in the last couple years. I would not go on naviance data more than 3-4 years old on this. To say the least, though, it’s not a safety — for anyone. Now, if there is an ED1 to BC or Colgate and an ED2 to Holy Cross, that probably makes sense….

Williamstown is a rough place to spend 4 years lol - but there are 2 pizzerias!

And now an Indian restaurant, cool cafe/bakery, sandwich place and a Thai restaurant?? I was a student there 30+ years ago and loved Williamstown. College is one of those rare opportunities to live in a place like that.

And decent skiing 15 minutes away and pretty good skiing an hour or so away. Williams FTW. And if you don't like skiing, that is your prerogative, but some people do. There is probably some aspect of your preferred school that I think is pointless or unimportant or whatever - that's why there are lots of schools and no need to insult it (not directed at you but at the inevitable response I will get). To each his own.
