CMU has a reputation of a grind school

Georgia Tech is just objectively better for Engineering hence it's #3 ranking and is constantly a Top Feeder to top engineering firms Kid can't go wrong either, IMHO. If kid is more social may like the vibe at GT better.

If CS I may pick CMU but both are great at that. For Engineering, for sure GT.

Is that an issue at GT or just assuming because they have 20k undergrads. BTW, GT is also on the preferred list of many "top notch" employers.

Mine two went to CMU for CS and IS. Loved it. But they both came up the private school route so the smaller school setting worked better for them.

A friend’s son is at Gtech for industrial engineering and loves it. He wanted a big school and better weather.

Can’t go wrong with either. Do visit before you decide. CMU’s carnival week is coming up (first weekend in April). You will get a good feel of the campus, the student body and enjoy the buggy race.

My son was admitted to both as well. We visited GT last fall but haven’t been to CMU. CMU doesn’t have any admitted student visit days in the portal so I’m wondering if that information is coming.

If can afford it, go for CMU. More prestigious. If it's a strain on finances then Gatech.

Not everybody wants a "traditional college experience," whatever that means. CMU is objectively better for engineering and has better employment outcomes due to prestige and a smaller class size. Pittsburgh is also a nicer place to attend college than Atlanta, IMO. A bit sleepier but cozier -- definitely an underrated city. If you want to party, just go over to Pitt.

Pittsburgh is horrible with worse weather. But preference matters.

GT is #3? Hard to believe - MIT, CalTech, Berkeley, Stanford, Cornell, and CMU even. I’d put all those above GT

It’s definitely not “objectively better”. I’d pick GaTech because CMU has a reputation for being absolutely miserable socially.
