Is the uncertainty of AI reshaping your family’s thoughts about college?

Anonymous
It gave me pause about paying for private high school. Instead we are keeping our kids in public school and investing that money with the aim of giving it to our kids later. It is making our kids think differently about majors/jobs (one had wanted to do CS but has since switched to engineering - although not sure how much better that is).

AI is the MLM for tech bros.

My kids are just finishing up their degrees so it’s a moot point for us, but I was wondering if my kids were in high school right now, would I discourage them from spending money on college right now. Basically let the world settled out for a couple of years and then see if it would be better for them to have that $150k vs a public university degree.

How has the speed of AI impacted your thoughts about college?

Save money on college? Yes.

Skip college? No.

For my younger 8th grader who we also had apply to private school, I am definitely rethinking this

A liberal arts education is more likely to survive than areas that are easily automated - CS, accounting, etc.

+1 liberal arts from a top university is the most protected in the future- even AI experts say so.

Nobody's knows. They're all guessing.

Health care seems to be pretty AI proof but that has its own challenges.

But what is the alternative? We don’t know yet, so with the uncertainty college still seems like the best option

No, flexibility is key. College, yes. Prepared to take on other training and accreditation, yes. Prepared to be physical for the short term, yes. My kids are looking at all options with college being the first step.

No. AI can automate some low level tasks in a professional setting but IME working with AI on a daily basis, it’s a lot more hype than substance. It’s a far bigger concern for people who don’t have a college education than those that do.

College has been around since medieval times and my family's been going to college since the late 1800s.

Why would I let rapacious tech bros and their crappy LLMs destroy my faith in the value of becoming a wiser, more introspective, learned person?

Agree. People here are so mercenary. Don’t understand joys of life of the mind.

It’s making me counsel my kids to go abroad for school that’s for sure.

Just not to push CS unless that's already a serious interest.

In some ways AI makes a liberal arts education more worthwhile, as long as you don't have to take out too many loans.

AI is a tool, just like any other technology. You can learn how to use it or fall behind.
