These schools pertain to a brief sub-topic. — DP |
No they don’t. We are talking about Swarthmore and Haverford stay on topic. Please don’t drag this out, either. This is the last comment I will make on this. |
| Personally, I prefer Haverford. Swarthmore sounds suffocatingly boring. |

Visited both with DC last year. Swarthmore seems like a great education but very intense—tour guide was bragging about how much work/little sleep everyone gets, they have an honors program you have to apply to and if you get in you take something that sounds like a lower level version of phd orals with external examiners, and if you do not choose that I guess you are signaling to grad programs that you did not choose top rigor. Less grade inflation than similar LACs. I’m not sure how much harder the classes actually are or whether there is just a culture of “misery Olympics.” DC took a hard pass after the tour. But if you are headed for a PhD/ are happy to grind, it might be a fit. Certainly is much more prestigious than Haverford these days, within the group of people who are aware of LACs and their relative rankings.
in other respects they seem similar— small classes, lots of faculty attention, plentiful research opportunities, a fair number of nerds/non-partiers (Haverford even has a nerd house that hosts alcohol free weekend events like laser tag, board games, mystery, etc), beautiful campus, access to Philly. Haverford has a high percentage of athletes and is one of the smaller LACS, so not sure what it would be like for a non-athlete boy who does not see himself at the nerd house. Haverford also has a nice but small strip of restaurants and shops in walking distance (Ardmore), whereas we might have missed it, but it didn’t seem as though there was anything very close to Swarthmore. |
Lol get a grip. I assume pp was replying to my comment about the rarity (or not, apparently) of ice rinks at non-NESCAC schools. It’s ok to have brief side conversations. |
| There's a notable difference in campus size. Swarthmore resides on 425 acres, Haverford on 200. |
I’m not sure this matters. Amherst is 1000 acres and most of it is empty land. |
And now we’re taking about swarthmore and Haverford! Love to hear your on topic opinion. |
|
Responding to a pp, Haverford was likely on fox news because the college's president had to testify on capitol hill. As an alum I was very unimpressed with the class strike and how the leadership (the adults!) handled it -- more land acknowledgements etc, as if that was the issue.
But that said, the nonpolitical kids i know who go there now seem happy, so even at a small school there are plenty of people who aren't activists or sjws who seem to like it fine as well. |
Sure! You can read my earlier contributions at 13:12, 13:23, and 13:24. |

Both of these schools are recognized for their arboretums, with Swarthmore placing 3rd in this ste and Haverford 14th:

| Haverford if they’re at all interested in a campus community. I know it’s not typically dcum advice to tell someone to go to a “less prestigious” college, but really swarthmore has no personality outside of working all the time. If your goal is just to work yourself to the bone and have a difficult undergrad, go to Uchicago and do it with the best of the best (this is shade to neither institution, just being blunt). I just think the average LAC student will be reasonably challenged and enjoy their time more at Haverford than go to Swarthmore where the whole place can be summed up as “we’re miserable but it’s so fun!” |
Does anyone know what bot this is? They always send google share links and always are boosting some ranking site instead of giving any details or analysis. It’s a waste of time to read their comments. |

What's the difference?
Thirty-five years ago I went on study abroad with a guy who went to either Swarthmore or Haverford, then later I ended up in the same master's program as him. Haven't heard from him in probably 30 years, but we connected on LinkedIn like 15 year ago. Every year or two since then he springs to mind for a minute, and I wonder which school it was he went to. I check LinkedIn to find out, then forget for another year or two and check again. |
And I’ll add, the ice rink convo was on-topic until the very last post, out of five total posts, so your heavy-handed topic policing has been far more off topic than the original side convo. Congrats! |
