How does Swarthmore differ from Haverford?

Anonymous
They seem more or less identical at first blush?

Swarthmore has a senior requirement that's almost like a PhD defense. It seems more intense, more academic.

I was very impressed but DD thought it was too intense and DH agreed.

More intense, more striver. More self-contained (most Haverford and BMC students cross campuses a lot, socially or academically, but the tri-college system is far less used).

Better in education quality. Much weaker in brand name in general public. Less opportunities in some aspects.

Over the past decade, Haverford College has become a poster child for "wokeness" and "political correctness" that interferes with developing a mature, accepting campus culture.

Swarthmore's rep is as a PhD candidate factory. Very serious students & faculty.

Disagree. Probably slightly better education but not much. Brand name is similar. Haverford kids are more mainstream though it has become a bit more progressive in recent years. Swarthmore has more quirky kids, though I know plenty of very mainstream kids who are extremely happy there so can't fully generalize.

Haverford more likely to end up in something corporate. Swarthmore more likely in academia or similar.

Sorry. Misread haverford for Harvard.

Did you hear this on Fox News regarding Haverford? I know a relatively apolitical kid who is politically moderate and possibly even leans right in the traditional sense (but is not MAGA) from outside the northeast who is very happy at Haverford.

Generally agree on Swarthmore.

Senior thesis is required for both institutions. It’s pretty typical for an LAC.

Wait, you think Haverford has “much” greater general public brand recognition? I would not think so at all. If anything, the opposite — but not to a significant degree.

Bryn Mawr offers my favorite curriculum of the Tri-Co schools. Students seeking a coeducational environment might prefer Haverford over Swarthmore for greater access to BMC's curriculum, along with inherent access to Haverford's own offerings, of course.

lol I’m the pp who expressed surprise above. I almost added, any additional brand recognition for Haverford comes from people mixing it up with Harvard. 😂

Doubt that Haverford Colege ever made it to Fox News as it is a tiny, inconsequential college.

No, the campus turmoil over wokeness/political correctness was reported in the school newspaper & carried in other print sources.
Was discussed at length on other college forums.

Happy to read that you know one student at Haverford College who is not obsessed with being woke/political correctness, but that is not the reality for the rest of the kids.

You’re speaking on matters years ago. None of the students you’re blabbering about even attend Haverford anymore, move on and actually help OP.

And a few bad eggs were reported in the paper and thus represent EVERY SINGLE STUDENT at the school except the one I know (and I know several of their friends who are similar). The school definitely generally leans left of center. But it is not some 60s hotbed of AOC activism.
