A Zionist is simply a person who supports the existence of Israel as a Jewish state. Nothing more. Don't be tarted.

When did Zionist become the equivalent of Nazi?

I think israel should exist. Am I a Zionist?

I think Israel should not exist and be replaced by the country of “Israel and Palestine”
Am I therefore an anti-Semite? Should I be censured by a college for daring to say such a thing?

Yes, you are a Zionist, and there's nothing wrong with that, which was the point of the previous post. The people conflating Zionism, the simple belief that Jews should have their own state, however tiny, in the Middle East, with Nazism are the idiots. Most couldn't define either word.

You may or may not be an anti-Semite, but you're definitely tarted. What do you think would happen to the living standards in Tel Aviv if you got your wish?

I agree - but beware the SLACs. Wesleyan is god awful for anyone not on the left politically (including moderates)- you will be a pariah, unless you are an athlete and then you will just hide amongst your teammates for 4 years

This whole conversation is stupid, because why would a college have a policy centered around accepted/unaccepted beliefs. If a Chinese student calls Taiwan a fake country, I see no reason for them to be kicked out. If a Russian student wants to say Ukraine is Russian territory, we live on. Why the hell is Israel some special infant that can’t handle criticism.

People aren’t getting kicked out for saying they don’t support Israel. People are getting kicked out because they were supporting Hamas, Hezbollah and Isis - all Terrorist organizations sanctioned by the United States. This was a big problem at NU two years ago. It’s much much better now (NU parent) that they kicked Hezbollah off campus.

Otherwise no one cares if you don’t like Israel. You just can’t support a terrorist organization in your quest to be anti-Israeli. Find another legal way.

The pendulum has swung so much that now rather than being a “hotbed of liberalism” where conservative thought wasn’t well tolerated, we are now in a place where fear of the administration, bad publicity, and loss of donors is making it such that any controversial topic is steered away from - at risk of termination. Rather than a fulsome conversation around Israel and Gaza, for example, there is an expectation that it be avoided at all costs.

What colleges are doing this well - and in a balanced way? Harvard - after standing up for some time - is now toeing the new line. I was disappointed to hear about Northwestern in this article, and we know Columbia has laid down.

“Still” committed? They were very much not committed to free speech before; you had to toe the progressive line. Republicans said they were for free speech; sadly they simply want to do what progressives have been doing for the last 20 years and shutdown dissenting views. I don’t think anyone actually wants free speech.
