Help me to stop leaving my keys in the car

Anonymous
This is a problem for me when I rent a car because I’m used to having a regular key. I now tuck the fob into my waistband or bra before hitting the ignition if I don’t have pockets or a purse, but I try to wear a tiny phone sized crossbody bag when I don’t have pockets.

Do you not lock the car when you leave it? If it's a newer car, it won't lock with your keys inside. Wouldn't that be a sign to take out the keys and put them in your pocket?

Or, instead of throwing them in your console, throw them in your pocket!

That's nuts.

Hook that onto a belt loop.

I've tried that once or twice but it makes me feel like a janitor LOL.

And, I keep leaving my keys in the car. At the grocery store while the kids are at soccer practice, not usually in my driveway because I need my keys to get in the house.

I usually don't carry a purse, I throw my phone with DL and cc in my pocket, and when I leave my house and lock it, I end up throwing my keys in the center console and leaving them there wherever I go.

How do you all remember your keys when you have a fob and push button to start your car, and not leave them in your car?

Why do people do this crap?

Reads as "I threw my Daughter in Law and Concealed Carry gun in my pocket."

That's a you issue. These are pretty common on the internet.

Lanyard- wear it over your neck. Bam! Problem solved. You’re welcome.

Mine does too, and the dashboard says "Keys Left in Car."

This is probably a feature on your car if its one year old. Look up the manual online and see how to turn it on.

I’m not sure why people are jumping all over you, this happens all the time. The cops in my town regularly send out alerts asking people to remember to take their key fobs out of their cars. Anyway, it happened to me several times when I put the fob in the cup holder so I never let myself do that anymore. I either put the key in my pocket or carry a purse if I don’t have pockets.

Get a wristlet or purse. Come on. I haven’t touched a car key in years. Do you not lock your car when you leave it? You are asking for it to be stolen and you will be the idiot who gets their car stolen because they left the keys in it.

No self respecting person wants to be seen in a Tesla these days.

I've locked my keys in my SUV a few times. As it's a Ford Explorer, but the basic trim, I made sure to add the keypad to the drivers door so I can type in a number to get the doors to open. It's a great feature.

My 50 yo sister is like this. She doesn’t carry a purse. She routinely makes me hold her phone (with attached credit card sleeve) when we shop because it’s too heavy or she needs her hands free. Last week she lost her credit card because it fell out. She’s recently bought a luxury car that starts with her phone so she doesn’t need a key.

Personally I think she needs to grow up and carry a purse. I would never let anyone else touch my phone. Meanwhile I pack a suitable small purse for my things and then end up wedging in her stuff too.

I stood there, blocking a gas pump, not knowing what to do. 20 minutes later the lady who lived two houses down from us who I babysat for pulled up and told me "You're such an idiot" as she handed me the spare key.

I was a delicate flower and super embarrassed and angry and upset I had to say thank you to someone who'd just called me a name and angry at my mother that she wouldn't come, etc. So I vowed that would never happen again, and made it a point to hold my keys in my hands before opening the car door to get out.

Some solid parenting there. Natural consequences.

Put a tiny fake plant in the condole, so there’s no room for your keys to go there. I also agree with getting a tiny purse to throw everything into.
I get it, because when I take my metro card out of my wallet and put it in my back pocket, I often forget to put it back. Then the next day I don’t have my metro card. Habits can be hard to break.
