Of course they do. Everyone wants to smoke their competition. Can’t go 5-0 and not move up unless you’re losing a lot of top swimmers.

I’ll be happy to see the 5-0 team in our division, especially their coach, move on up.

Oakton IS graduating a lot of top swimmers. They were strong in D2 but would generally be crushed in D1.

Heard the same story when they were in D4- whining about not wanting to move up to 2. Then they did well in 2 and finished undefeated this year.

Regardless, the data doesn’t lie. It wouldn’t be pretty for them in D1, even with their current top-scoring seniors.

Well maybe they should have given D1 a go this year because they would have either beat or had a VERY close meets with DR

Respectfully, DR is only one of the teams in D1. The data is clear that Oakton would not fare well against the rest, to put it mildly. I understand your point that based on 2025 records and head to head match ups, you could swap the two. I guess someone has to be the sacrificial lamb of D1.

Exactly. No one wants to be the bottom D1 team, but someone has to do it. I do not envy the seeding committee. I can't imagine how much effort they put into seeding.

OKM here. I know nobody seems to want to believe this, but we are better this year because the majority of our swimmers are in their up year. Next year will be more like 2024. This season was so fun and competitive, but we don’t have the depth that the other D1 teams have to make up for our even-year younger-side athletes. Oakton and OKM may be hanging together in the D1 basement, but we will do our best!

It’s possible that Donaldson run and oakton swap but I think there is a decent chance d1 stays fixed. I’m pretty sure that high point will move out of d2, either to 3 or 4.

Please! We have had fun swimming against Arlington and McLean neighbors for the past few seasons but the scores this season have been the most lopsided in NVSL. We are outgunned and limited by our boundaries but we run fun, fast, and spirited meets so I hope D2 or D3 will be happy to have us.

Until this year DR has finished no lower than 4th since moving up to D1; one down year is not indicative of needing to move down to D2 or D3

There is a NVSL process for this. There are surveys that are recommended to be completed by each team each week for missing swimmers, people leaving, people graduating etc. The seeding committee then uses these details to determine who will move where.

They want evenly matched teams, but D1 is a different animal because there is nowhere higher to move the teams that are in the division. There is always going to be a low team, but this year proved that there were a lot of close ones! I hope it stays this way. Competition is good for everyone.

D1 sucks. No teams should be forced in/forced to stay against their will.

It feels great as a parent to be able to complain about it, but nobody is forced in or to stay. The team, through their reps, get to provide input to the NVSL on anticipated roster changes, strength of swimmers rising, and how they enjoyed their season among other factors. This is the system and the teams choose to participate. It isn't fun to lose every meet convincingly and that's true in d1 as well as d5 and d12.

It only sucks for a team that feels like they can't compete at the highest level and isnt having fun in the process. The last team to rise up through the divisions was OKM and they have been doing very well--good swimmers, fun parents, and great spirit. There was a lot more parity this year. OKM beat Overlee, Overlee beat Chesterbrook, Highlands nearly beat Tuckahoe. The meets are about swimming with the best and having fun. While DR finished at the bottom this year, they have phenomenal swimmers and the meets are always a blast. Their neighborhood restrictions make roster depth a challenge, but thats their choice. They have a good developmental program synced with swim farm and lots of potential for the future. DR has a team that would crush any team in any other division. They've only been in d1 for the past five years, but we have always enjoyed swimming with them.

With the exception of Overlee, teams will come up and down in D1 based on the ebbs and flows of their rosters over the years. There are instances, like Langley, of a team coming up after losing half their roster and not being competitive, but for the rest it is a good match even if the outcome can be predicted in advance. It's summer swimming. Nobody is forcing anyone to be here and if you aren't having fun, maybe you should try soccer.

Tuckahoe flew to the top of the division like they were on a private plane. ✈️

Donaldson Run is a stronger team than Oakton and has good potential. If they drop to 2 they'll be back after a year. Good balance in d1 this year. OKM and Highlands had some amazing swims.

Its tough for a team like DR to be In division 1, the Hoa limits them to only have swimmers within the community boundary. However they have a lot of kids just need some good coaching to develop those young kids..

Coaching at DR is fine, Coach Phil is terrific

It’s jack@SS parents who care about themselves more than kids has led to a lot of athletic kids leaving swim and many on this year’s team not really caring anymore

Parents want to drop to D3 so their kids can hoist a trophy they can post on instagram, it’s gross behavior

Wow. I cannot believe people care this much about a summer suburban swim league.

You got that right there are some amazing athletes that don't even swim all year round and still do pretty well in D1 Meets.

DR will be just fine staying in D1. They have had exactly one down year since moving up and have a TON of Club swimmers and a huge swim team. The HOA complaints are rediculous.

I disagree Dr has alot of seniors leaving. Also not soo many club swimmers, but some great athletes. How can you say the HOA has no impact? Dr can't recruite like the others?

The other teams aren't recruiting. The issue is the HOA boundary lines. If the HOA votes to open it to outside swimmer (outside of the HOA) that is probably something that could be done, depending on how the bylaws read for who can be members of the swim club. If they want to expand then the HOA Board should discuss the topic.

Thank goodness there are 15-ish divisions in NVSL.
