This thread is about MD taxes, not federal.

True. Mine doubled. And $110 / $120 a year — $10 a month — is not the kind of “fees shot up enormously” that anyone who, say, buys coffee at Starbucks, usually finds onerous.

I do wish I’d taken the option to renew for 2 years last year though.

+1 just read about all the car related taxes/fees going up.

-registration
-smog check
-buying new tires

Ridiculous.

I want to get out of MoCo, too, but feel stuck here.

- the vehicle excise tax in Maryland increased from 6% to 6.5%.
-The certificate of title fee is doubling from $100 to $200.
- The cost for vehicle emissions inspections fee has increased from $14 to $30.
- Additionally, residents will also be facing a $5 dollar tire fee on each new tire purchased, which will officially go into effect in January.
- The cost of registering a vehicle has also gone up.
For passenger cars weighing up to 3,500 pounds, as of July 1, the registration will cost $120.50 for one year, just over $240 for two years.
-There will also be a new 3.5% tax for rental vehicles.
- In addition to those changes, the sales tax on cannabis products will increase from 9% to 12%, taxes on sports betting are increasing from 15% to 20%, and there will now be a 6% tax on many vending machine purchases.
- the 3% tech tax took effect July 1. And no, this is not just a business to business tax. The tax will be passed on to the consumers. Isn't that what Dems have been saying about tariffs.. that it will be passed on to consumers.

WTF MD. I so regret moving here. DH said let's look at VA, and I said no because it's south of the Potomac. I didn't want to move too far south. I hugely regret my decision.

Why are you still here then?

dp.. some people are stuck here for several reason.. kids in school, too hard to sell the house now unless you do so at a loss, your job is here, your family is here.....

My kid is a senior in HS, but even after they leave for college, they'll want to come home and visit friends. I don't want to punish my kid because the people of MD keep voting for politicians who like to spend spend spend rather than belt tighten when times get rough.

We had to belt tighten when DH lost his job. But, MD is saying that we should still pay more.

All those car fees, including tires? Already so expensive to begin with. No relief for low-income folks?

I don’t get the tire fee. I get that they want more money, but I’d think that the priority would be to encourage as many people as possible to buy newer, safer tires.

Well gosh, this is pretty recent stuff.
You got me, I'm a total failure because I haven't sold my house, changed jobs within a week.

I assume it's because tires are environmentally unfriendly, and they want a fee to dispose it "properly".

MD loves to tax the heck out of people, including low income people. Those taxes related to cars will hurt lower income people the most, the people they purport to want to help.

Listen to your DH. I bailed out two years ago from Kensington to NoVa and saved a ton in taxes plus everything is nicer over here. The roads, parks, neighborhoods. Love it.

Just curious, how do car fees compare? I always heard about the Fairfax car tax and it sounded bad.

We are also in Kensington but won’t be trading our SFH and yard for a 1970s townhouse just to be in NOVA.

Wasn’t closely tracking this but, pretty interesting it’s now higher than DC at the highest level (if you add MoCo county tax likely going to 3.3% + the cap gains surcharge of 2%).

How’s everyone feeling about it?

I don't understand all these car related fees going up. They should have a luxury vehicle tax on vehicles more than like $50k and collect revenue from all those people with money who want fancy vehicles that they don't need

Keep poor people poor. All the socialist's policies worldwide are about creating a widening gap between the haves and have nots. Is why my family fled their own country, was being ruined by socialism.

I'm a high earner and will be hit with the tax increases. I am unhappy about it. I hate the bloat and wasteful spending in the state. Terrible economics-defying projects the purple line etc.

One day I will move from Maryland. Just not sure when exactly, but the pressure is building.
