-smog check
-buying new tires

Ridiculous.

I want to get out of MoCo, too, but feel stuck here.

- the vehicle excise tax in Maryland increased from 6% to 6.5%.
-The certificate of title fee is doubling from $100 to $200.
- The cost for vehicle emissions inspections fee has increased from $14 to $30.
- Additionally, residents will also be facing a $5 dollar tire fee on each new tire purchased, which will officially go into effect in January.
- The cost of registering a vehicle has also gone up.
For passenger cars weighing up to 3,500 pounds, as of July 1, the registration will cost $120.50 for one year, just over $240 for two years.
-There will also be a new 3.5% tax for rental vehicles.
- In addition to those changes, the sales tax on cannabis products will increase from 9% to 12%, taxes on sports betting are increasing from 15% to 20%, and there will now be a 6% tax on many vending machine purchases.
- the 3% tech tax took effect July 1. And no, this is not just a business to business tax. The tax will be passed on to the consumers. Isn't that what Dems have been saying about tariffs.. that it will be passed on to consumers.

WTF MD. I so regret moving here. DH said let's look at VA, and I said no because it's south of the Potomac. I didn't want to move too far south. I hugely regret my decision.

Listen to your DH. I bailed out two years ago from Kensington to NoVa and saved a ton in taxes plus everything is nicer over here. The roads, parks, neighborhoods. Love it.

Just curious, how do car fees compare? I always heard about the Fairfax car tax and it sounded bad.

We are also in Kensington but won’t be trading our SFH and yard for a 1970s townhouse just to be in NOVA.

The VA car tax isn’t even close for most people. Use the online calculators to put in your specific #s - you’re likely to save a ton in taxes moving to VA. The county tax alone - before the MD state tax - was costing us $25K/year before we moved to VA. I think our car tax is $2K/year for a 2026 vehicle that cost $60K.

Now that trump wants to cut everyone's federal taxes, that presents an opportunity for Wes to collect more MD taxes now that everyone's paycheck is getting bigger!

no one's federal taxes are being cut, except for people that can take advantage of the higher SALT deduction. All the rates are staying the same.

True. Mine doubled. And $110 / $120 a year — $10 a month — is not the kind of “fees shot up enormously” that anyone who, say, buys coffee at Starbucks, usually finds onerous.

I do wish I’d taken the option to renew for 2 years last year though.

Mine went up to almost $200 for a Subaru Outback, which is technically classified in the same category as SUVs, who would have thought. Compared to what we previously paid it did shoot up enormously. When this is part of a broad creeping upward of fees and small local taxes, it does make Maryland increasingly more and more expensive a state to live in. It's tiresome.

This is an intriguing argument. What are the services you get in Maryland that you can't get in low tax states? I am genuinely curious. And I'm not interested in the hypothetical or abstract, but actual services you do use that you can't get in Virginia or Pennsylvania or Florida or NC?

The advantage of Maryland is that salaries are probably higher than in most lower tax states but beyond that I don't see credible evidence that services are better for most people. Many services in Maryland are countywide and not statewide, such as schools.

Ironically high state taxes are great for poor retirees.

My MIL lives in a high tax places with tons of services. But her income is low she pays no state tax.

I get it that you are trying to trash NOVA, but don't you think it says something that you can only afford a 1970s townhouse in NOVA as a trade for your SFH in MoCo. There are lots of diehard MoCo people from Bethesda, Chevy Chase and maybe Potomac and Kensington, but I moved to Arlington 25 years ago from Bethesda and don't regret it at all. I'll never convince my freinds in MD, but they are paying unnecessary taxes to sit in red light to red light in that nanny state. I would never move back to Md.

Long Island. She has a tiny house with lower property taxes due to size, senior and veteran exemptions , a 25 year old car and makes low enough no income tax state or federal. Her town has amazing services taxpayer funded. Moving to a no income state would be way less services but she already pays no taxes.

+1. Also anyone who complains about the car tax and compares it to being similar to the county tax is showing their hand re their modest income

It has reached the point that we will probably change our official residence to MA, where we have a second home. MA now has the millionaires surcharge but we are getting close to retirement at which point our income will drop below a million. Ironic that taxachussetts is now lower than MD.

I think Md is becoming unaffordable. Many people are moving to NC for a similar lifestyle that’s much more affordable. Moore should have axed Kirwan/blueprint education plan when it became clear we don’t have the funds for it right now instead of raiding taxes on businesses. I’m a big supporter of public education but that bill is overspending at a time we can’t afford it. Also the gambling and weed legalization has only hurt quality of life. I was really hopeful about Moore but regret voting for him.

I'm looking to move out to nova and yes I make over 7 figures. Moore is an idiot.
