Tell me about Ole Miss

Is he interested in the Arabic Flagship Program?

Alabama is rolling admissions too, so you can apply as soon as it opens and get a decision quickly. Another thing about Alabama is they have a very nice scholarship program that attracts a lot of high stat students that want to go to school for free. Auburn is not a safety but could be a Target and they have 3 EA rounds so could know mid September if you apply right away. Then you could have 2 decisions before most EA deadlines. UK has gotten pretty popular as a choice for many who have been shut out from Auburn, utk and UofSC since they have gotten much more competitive.

University of Arkansas. Walmart money. Lots of upper middle class Texans. SEC.

My DC applied to Auburn early and got a response before the EA deadline for other schools. He ended up going somewhere else, but he would have been happy at Auburn (it ended up being his second choice) so that was his “safety” and it was nice to be able to focus on targets and reaches.

convince him to consider non SEC schools. not a good sign that he is basing education on a sports conference.

or at least consider rah rah sports schools from other conferences. VT, Clemson (very conservative), Indiana, OH state, Penn state

Lane kiffin and Chris beard are gonna leave one day, then their football and. Basketball teams will go back to being garbage. Mississippi is the most corrupt country in the state. I understand wanting to have sports teams to root for the rest of your life. Why not Oklahoma, Arizona, Kansas or schools like that?

I grew up in the South and know many people who went to Ole Miss and have been there to visit many times myself.

Pros:
-Beautiful campus
-Charming college town
-Warm weather
-With your son’s profile/education experience, he could quite easily do very well there academically as he will be in the top % students
-Low cost of living and you can probably get them to give him a lot of $$ to go there
-As a conservative who goes to church he should fit right in
-Great food

Cons
-difficult and likely expendive to get there/back. Nearest “major” airport is Memphis and it takes about 1 hr 15 minutes to drive from Memphis to Oxford. I put “major” in quotations bc Memphis airport is kind of small and depending on season can be difficult to get direct flights, especially on desirable routes/times. Memphis does have direct flights to both DC and Baltimore but they will likely be expensive since Memphis is a smaller airport.
-I’m liberal so for me the politics are a major con. Maybe not for you. But racism and sexism and homophobia often go hand in hand w conservatism these days, especially in a place like Mississippi which has such a horrible hate filled history that has become ingrained in the culture. Then again, college campuses even in MS, are more diverse and you will find all types of ppl there. Just a heavy concentration of “good ole boy” types mixed in.
-large class sizes
-heavy focus on alcohol consumption as entertainment since there’s really not much to do in Oxford and no big cities in the immediate vicinity

Oh and 1 more con:
-there won’t be a lot of other kids from DC area there most likely. Unless this has changed significantly since I last visited/knew of it…most kids there are from MS obv but then lots of kids from other parts of the Deep South. A DC kid might feel like an outsider.

I went to Oxford last summer; flew American to Memphis and drove a little over an hour (was a very pretty countryside drive, at least the way Waze sent me). Was easy to me (as I’m used to Beltway/395 insanity traffic where it takes an hour to go 10 miles). Flight was not expensive at all. Flew direct from DCA. Stayed at the Graduate. Cute college town. Everyone everywhere was lovely.

Go check it out.

Couldn't agree more!

Yeah, this is why I said depending on season. Easier to find direct, inexpensive flights in summer. Not as easy or cheap the other seasons in my experience. (I used to live in Memphis and flew out of that airport a lot). While you can almost always find direct flights to DC from Memphis, at some times of year they will be very $$$.

Your kid will be fish out of water. Sure, cute town and campus, and fun environment. But lets be honest, you can select MUCH BETTER schools as safeties than good ole miss…
