Racism in Australia

I've seen over the years how they've had problems with hate crimes etc. We are planning on driving from Melbourne to Sydney and stopping in towns along the way. Spouse is non-white. We've had other non-white friends who have been to Australia and said they encountered a lot of racists. One studied there for a year and hated it because of the racism. Australia has had a long problem with discrimination against indigenous peoples and Asians. Is it OK to travel there, particularly in the smaller towns, or should we expect hostility? Yes, I know it won't be the same as racism in the US. But is it enough to make travel unpleasant ?

White people are very racist. It is an inherent character flaw.

Um have you been to Asia? Humans are racist.

Australians are extremely racist. Frankly, I have not even met a single pleasant person from AUS.

That sounds like a you problem, frankly.

+1000

The US gets more criticism, but there are other places both worse and better about racism. It is a global issue.

Which are the "better" ones? Countries that are mostly one race?

Black father of DD’s friend told me about his solo trip to Australia 25 years ago on which he was invited to stay with people he met on the plane (which he did) and also invited to pubs by people he met when he was walking around. No doubt people have similar stories coming to the US. Mostly people are good.

We are a Black family that spent several weeks there recently. We didn't have a single bad experience. People were actually quite welcoming.

I think the racist impression might be due to the expectation that as a white liberal society descended from wokey multi-cultural England, Australia would be as sensitive to race issues as their US cousins are.

But the English class system is probably not as deeply entrenched there as in the motherland.

Australians are not descended from woke English liberals. Where did you get the idea that there is an English class system there?
