Shampoo that cleans

Every 3-4 shampoos you need to double wash with a clarifying shampoo to remove build up. I use Herbal Essences clarifying but any clarifying one will do. You’ll see a big difference.

If you go sulfate free it’s important you also go silicone free, and a lot of hair products have silicone. If the silicone builds up on your hair you need sulfate or a good clarifying shampoo to break it down.

I use Oribe clarifying shampoo and Briogeo sulfate free shampoo and avoid silicones unless I’m going to an event and I know I can wash my hair very soon after. My hair is so much cleaner without silicones and sulfates.

Shampoo your scalp twice.

The mainstream drugstore brands all still have sulfates. Try something like Dove.

my hair would look horrible with no silicones and no sulfates …

I like Keune's low-poo shampoo. It's somehow gentle but really cleansing and it's great for keeping out frizz in textured hair. I discovered it at a salon

I have straight and slightly color treated hair and also use this and have for years - it’s great stuff for once a week.

If you use a clarifying shampoo, what's your weekly routine? Do you use conditioner on the day you use clarifying shampoo?

I typically wash my hair every other day. I've been using nexxus hydration, and I like it overall, but it gets a little heavy feeling. What if on my weekend wash I used the clarifying shampoo instead? Would I still use the nexxus conditioner with the clarifying shampoo?

O&M detox shampoo is my staple. Smells amazing and has no synthetic fragrances

With the caveat that I live in a hot climate and exercise outside every day - I wash and condition my hair every day using this shampoo (plus a leave in conditioner and some curl cream): https://www.briogeohair.com/products/destined-for-density-megastrength-caffeine-biotin-peptide-density-shampoo-conditioner-bundle?variant=40274408341586¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=18138708173&utm_content=&gc_id=18138708173&h_ad_id=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw9eO3BhBNEiwAoc0-jcggplMiJCEzcngUfAfYQny1OUNAHjExj5IsAO7V_rVlbUzeDmyn2xoCF1YQAvD_BwE

Once a week, or whenever I feel like I need it if that's more often, I use Malibu C because it really cleans the heck out of my hair. I either use my regular conditioner or a hair masque with it, depending on what I feel like.

I also sometimes use this scalp shampoo - https://philipb.com/products/peppermint-avocado-shampoo

I got it as a sample and like it, but haven't pulled the trigger on buying the full size bottle yet. Probably will at some point. I'll switch between that and the Malibu C.

I have wavy/curly hair that is coarse but thin, FWIW.

Aveeno apple cider vinegar shampoo is a good once weekly.
I use it as my budget option for the bumble Sunday shampoo.

I just want to note that I did the whole sulfate-free except for a clarifying shampoo once a week for a couple years and I thought it was fine but noticed I was going through the clarifying shampoo fast.

Well then on a 3 week vacation where I could not be fussy about haircare I used regular old Pantene Daily moisture shampoo and conditioner and my har was so much more manageable and felt better and was really only a little drier than with the sulfate-free plus clarifying combo. Which I was able to fix easily with some leave in product which never builds up because I shampoo with a sulfate conditioner regularly?

I don't know. I think a lot of us with textured hair were convinced that sulfates were the enemies when really we could have address problems like frizz and screwy wave and curly patterns with better leave in products instead of this super inconvenient and complicated sulfate and silicon free regimen that can so wrong sooooo easily.

It has been really liberating to forget everythng I thought I knew about textured hair care and just go back to basically the hair routine I had in high school and college when by the way pictures indicate my hair looked pretty great.

OP here, the problem is all the brands i used to use have gone sulfate free. For a while I stocked up with old versions bought at TJ Maxx, etc. Since then ive been casting about trying different ones but not happy with any.

My hair salon uses Unite; i might try that.

I’m white with super thick, frizzy hair and have been trying all the no-sulfate, curly girl method, air drying products and techniques for years, to no avail. I went back to drugstore brands with silicones and all that plus heat styling and my hair looks good again.
