He was ideologically to the right of almost everyone. He wasn't particularly partisan so people called him a maverick.

No, they appreciate McCain because he lost easily to Obama, barely putting up a fight. They really love him because he challenged Bush, and loved to attack Republicans to get praise from the media. He also cosponsored three major bills that pushed Democrat priorities. Lieberman on global warming, Kennedy on amnesty, and Feingold on campaign finance reform(whcih Democrats would eventually regret I think).

I think what a lot of people remember was when the birther lady showed up at his rally and he gently corrected her about Obama's provenance. He was conservative AF but he wasn't as despicable as most human beings.
