OP here with an update: I went to the show. His opening act was a guy named Will who was really funny. He was funny. I sat between an old couple and a young couple. He didn't really interact with the audience at all.
To 3:25, I've been the only white person in various places before. My point in asking is sometimes a space is for specific people, and if other people go into that space they're not truly welcome. In this instance, I'd say the audience was maYYYYYYbe a fourth or even just a fifth black. |
He’ll no. Don’t sit in front. Get your ticket comfortably in an aisle seat in the back somewhere. I did comedy in the front row before and I ended up hiding in the bathroom most of the “show” |
Have you actually ever been to a small comedy club? Did you go once, and saw a solo audience member singled out, or what? I don't know where you're getting that image from, but you need to discard it from your head. Why so fearful? I've seen comedians riff on something they've asked audience members, but never attack the person (unless that person is a heckler!) or pick on a solo audience member for BEING solo. |
What shows are you terrified people attending, that you are so afraid of the performers you've paid to see, and whose overall material you surely should know a bit about?! |
Can we all agree that in a situation like this, we should just GO FOR IT? Life is short and we need all the good experiences we can gather. |
For real. POC are in these situations every freaking day. Get over it and go if you’re interested. (Sidebar - if you really think Trevor Noah’s fan base is so all-black, you may not really know much about him or his work). |
I went to see David Sedaris alone. I arrived to the Kennedy Center early and met him at the book signing before the show.
He wrote in my book in big colored sharpies, To Larla, ALONE! Thanks David. |
Sure you can! Go, have fun! |
OP here. I read his book on the suggestion of a coworker, liked it, and that's pretty much all I knew. Do I need to know everything about someone to the point of knowing the demographics of their audience to see them perform? At his show last night I sat with a couple on my left who were in their late 70's and a couple on my right who were in their 20's. So now I know. |
Can you imagine being Black and being this stressed out by this type of thing? I can’t! I’d be dead from all this stress. Your fears are weak. |
Was it a Gallagher show and you were wearing white? |
