DD's 3rd Grade SOL scores came in the mail today (in Virginia).
On the reading one there's some notation that her score (564?) was equivalent to a Lexile of 965L. Can someone interpret this for me? Never heard of what a Lexile is. |

Lexile is a reading level based on the complexity and vocabulary of the text. |
That suggests my 3rd grader is reading at the same level as a high school sophomore. I find that hard to believe. She's bright, but come on. |

15:37 here. You wanted to know what it was. Didn't say it was completely accurate. It's just one way of interpreting the level of a text. As a teacher, I've seen Lexile levels assigned to texts that I thought were way off.
It's just a number. Your daughter did well on the SOL. Clearly she's a strong reader. |
Ok. She must be better than me anyway, since I read the link and still can't make sense of what it is. LOL. |
I'm "in the profession" and I'm as confused as you.

25% of high school sophomores (and juniors) are not reading as well as your daughter, is what that chart is really saying. Assuming your daughter is solidly reading at about a 5th - 6th grade level (which is about where I'd say her Lexile puts her) that statistic is sadly about right. There are many high school sophomores who really aren't reading at a 5th grade level, unfortunately. On a different note, I think it is really not possible to convert a Lexile Score from an SOL score. That's nonsense! |
