Using grandparent address to get into a particular school cluster

Anonymous
Anybody done this? What kind of documentation do you have to show? Does my name need to be on those documents (ie utility bills, property deed, etc)?

Thanks.

Are you a masochist, by chance? You must be to come to DCUM asking this question. We get FIRED UP about folks who game the system.

Unless it's a hardship case, this will not fly.

It's anonymous and I can take the flames if someone is actually able to answer the question. We wouldn't be asking for a hardship exception even though they will be doing before and after care. And don't worry, we're not trying infiltrate your precious Bethesda schools.

You need to prove that you live there. I do not see MCPS granting a COSA simply due to grandma & grandpa live in said school cluster.
Anonymous
Of course, I have seen it all ... qualifying for COSA. Simply make the case.

what is cosa? (not any of the PPs)

COSA= change of school assigment-- an approved transfer into a different school (for magnet, hardship, etc) (not what OP was asking about)

I know someone who did this and it was discovered that the child didn't infact live with the grandparents by MCPS.

I'm not sure about what all transpired in between but in the end the child got to stay in the school. I believe parents were still able to argue hardship due to transportation issues.

oh, thank you! (for cosa explanation)

If the school is not at capasity in MoCo you can ask for a transfer even if the grandparents don't live in the district. My friend did this for her daughter who was being stalked by a boy. The school was on her way to work and not at capasity. Though she risks losing the spot each year.

The MCPS website says that you need either a property tax bill if you are a homeowner or a current lease if you are a renter to establish residency. So, if the grandparents put the parents on the property or draw up a lease for the family, it looks like it would be doable.

How can I easily determine if school is at capacity or not?

Apply for a COSA if you want to, but don't just lie. You will be forcing your kid into participating in your lie.

Again, it will NOT fly.

I know of only one case that worked.

single mother (teacher) with before care that ONLY took the kids to two schools

granted in her case
