This board is full of our aches and pains...a great place to vent sometimes. But what about the joys, the good experiences you are having, even if they are small compared to the labor of parenting. Share them...no flames...lets try to keep this thread positive.
I will start. I went to Maymont Park in Richmond today. It was awfully hot and humid there, but I treasured every moment walking through the Japanese gardens, feeding the animals with my whole family and getting a good workout walking up hill with a 3 yr old on my back. 11 years ago I was on a date with DH carrying my DSD on my back up the same hill. I never thought I would have returned to that place with the same man and his 3 childre.! It was a good feeling to have a decade later. It was rewarded with ice-cream and an air-conditioned drive back home. Simple but nice : ) |
Thanks, zumbamama, I needed this thread today...our PT nanny was supposed to start FT starting tomorrow and just called and bailed on the arrangement...but on to the "happy stories" that, thankfully, make all the unhappy ones worth getting up every morning...
We are in the midst of packing up to move houses this coming week. When we started packing, our almost 4yo daughter asked me where we were going?, isn't THIS her home?, and are we going on an airplane (our last moves were transatlantic moves)? I responded, respectively, we are moving to a new house, her home is wherever mommy and daddy and her are together, and no airplane this time around. She smiled and said "OK", then asked them all over again...the second round seemed to have done the trick. She then helped to pack her own boxes (picked what was OK to pack before the big day) and wrote her name and drew pictures on all her boxes (and some of ours...so much for labelling). Our little girl is growing up fast...a bittersweet joy! |
My husband took our 4 year old boy to watch the Frederick Keys play ball last night. There were fireworks, hot dogs, cotten candy, and a moon bounce. And, oh year, baseball.
They got back at 10 PM. As we poured our sleeping child (who was clutching one of those big foam hands) into his bed, he opened his eyes long enough to say, "Oh Mommy, too much fun....too much fun." |
oh pp that is soooo cute. |
At the county fair my 3 yr was so excited to hear the cows moo. She exclaimed "they do go moo, they do, they do! I always knew they do!) |
My mom brought me to an amphitheatre park in Annandale to see a Flamenco show...but she brought me a week early! We got there, and there was no show....so my 2 little ones put one on. They got on stage and sang God Bless America together, then DS did an Indiana Jones skit, and DD put a ballet show. A few parents saw them and their kids joined in the show. It rocked, but I never made it to the Flamenco show. |
I like this thread! More stories please? |
Driving in the car last week I caught sight of my 6 year old girl flapping her arms around in the backseat. I asked her what she was doing and if she was OK. She replied, "I am fine, mommy. I am just trying to make a funny noise in my armpit..." I thought I would drive off the road.
At a close friends wedding a year or so ago, one of the babysitters brought my daughter over from the kids table. She had to potty REALLY BAD!! I jumped up, rushed to the bathroom, and dragged her into the stall. I pulled her long dress up over her head and tried to pull her panties down...but there were no panties. So I asked her in my cross mommy voice, "where are your panties? what did you do with your panties?" And from underneath the tulle and satin came an equally cross voice, "you forgotted to put them on me, mommy!!" Indeed I had. I never felt so small. Did I mention she was the FLOWER GIRL ![]() A few years ago we had a big day at the play ground. She went down the slide about 50 times and then flipped out when we tried to put her in her carseat to go home. We got home and eventually did bath and found that she had to huge, really sore looking blisters, one on each butt cheek. They looked like really bad diaper rash. We had a doctor appointment that week and asked the doctor to look at the blisters. She gave us a Rx for a diaper rash creme that she basically made up. We got it filled and religously put this cream on her butt blisters telling her, "Dr. X made this creme for your butt to help it feel better. Let's lie on our belly to let the creme work." Months later, we went back to the doctor about a cold and she asked if we would see Dr. X. I told her I did not know if we would see Dr. X and said something absentmindedly like, "we like Dr. X, don't we?". She leaned over and said, "Yes, Mommy, Dr. X fix my butt..." in a tone that said, "umm...yes, doofus, duh!!! We like Dr. X A LOT!!" |
lmao !! |
OMG that's funny!
I finally got the money together for an Ikea desk for my first grader, which I put together and surprised him with. He loves it and is sitting there now working on a project. He's now got his very own dedicated space to do things and work on his school work, and that feels great. |
DS (age 3) loves Dr. Seuss books. He recently took interest in one about the body (Inside your Outside, or something like that). DH reads it to him so I don't know all the details, but it apparently describes how the body works. Well, the little darling is quite the sponge at this age. We were out to eat last night and he was scarfing down his food. We knew it was too much (after all, "kid-sized" portions are for up to age 10 or 12, and he's only 3). We said to him he was going to get sick, and eating too much isn't healthy. He looked at us, and in a decidedly NON whispering voice said: "don't worry, it's all going to come out my butt anyway!" Nice. |
I like this one. Made me feel good to read it. |
Me too. (The Ikea desk story). Cool.
Sometimes it's just the simple days. Today we went to the zoo and had a swim, will see friends later for a get together. My son, is beaming from ear to ear about this "last day of summer" as he starts school this week (PK), popcicles are surely in order for this evening! There are so many happy stories. What a great reminder! |
I'm obviously not over my post-partum hormonal issues, because this story totally made me cry! How sweet. DS is only 2 months old, so I don't have any similar stories. But, I will say that after 2 months of thrush, poopy diapers, sleepless nights... DS started smiling a few days ago! It's been pretty great to see that big grin. |
I am the poster with the pantyless armpit noise making six year old girl...thinking of her first gummy toothless baby smiles (the immediate PP) just reminded me of, brought tears to my eyes. ![]() |
