MCPS dress code/ dress restrictions?

Kids (DD and DS) are entering new in MS and HS. Previously they attended private, so I'm sure there's a lot more freedom of dress in the public schools. Any prohbited items other than t-shirts with obscene messages? Are spaghetti straps ok on girl's shirts? Are short shorts okay? Obviously, most of the questions relate to my daughter. Boys' dress are so much easier...

the school handbook will have the guidelines, it should be online. Our school had to issue an update in the spring because the girls were dressing so skimpily - short shorts and bandeau tops kind of things. Didn't seem to have much effect. I think the main rule is about offensive language on tshirts. Otherwise based on what I've seen it's pretty flexible.

It really depends on the attitude of the principal. I worked in one school where the principal was very adamant that girls should not come to school looking like whores. He had a box of huge sized tee-shirts in his office. When a teacher identified a girl with her butt hanging out of her shorts or midriff showing he would give the girl two choices. Call the mother to bring appropriate clothing to school or to wear the big tee shirt the rest of the day. Never once had an issue with a boy.

A father picking out girls clothing? Surely you jest. I never remember a father showing up with appropriate clothing. It was always the mother.

Can't speak for all schools but I can tell you that at our high school no bare backs, no bare tummies, and no short shorts for girls.

If Richard Montgomery is any indication, clothes are optional.

OP here. Thanks all. I guess the safest course is to choose things for the beginning of the year that are on the conservative side and then see what everyone else wears.
I just hope we don't have any morning battles with DD -- it was sort of easier when she had to wear polos and pleated shirts or khaki pants to school.

Something tells me that there are problems with this girl. If she has any self-esteem she would want to dress conservatively.

us

This is just ridiculous. PP must not have much experience with young teenage girls.

WJ too... boys wear jeans and t-shirts.
Girls wear virtually nothing. Might as well be 2 band-aids and a cork.
