Is it OK to ask a FCPS teacher for private tutoring?

Is it OK to ask a FCPS teacher for private tutoring for my DC who is not in the same school where the teacher works?

My DS will be going to a different school this fall so is it wrong to ask the previous grade teacher for private tutoring? Are there any FCPS rules that prevent the teachers to do private tutoring for FCPS students?

My daughter just completed 2nd grade in FCPS. On one of the last days of school, she brought home a flyer that was an offer from her 2nd grade teacher to provide tutoring over the summer.

I have done some elementary tutoring and so have other teachers in my school. We can't tutor students in our own class, but we can tutor students within the school. I wouldn't send home a flyer advertising my services.

FCPS publishes a list of teachers who offer tutoring. I would start there and see if the teacher you are interested in is listed...

Though, don't take not being listed here as law- I just looked through that list and none of the FCPS teachers I know who tutor are listed there. As the PP said the only rule is that teachers can't tutor students currently in their classroom. Go ahead and ask your teacher, and even if she is unavailable/unintrested, she will likely have a recommendation of another tutor that will work well with your son's personality and learning style.

I asked my 2nd grader's current teacher about tutoring for my kindergartner -- she said FCPS teachers could tutor as long as they aren't currently child's teacher (as previous posters have said) but also, if a teacher tutored it might keep them from having your kid in the future (in our case - since we love the 2nd grade teacher, we didn't want to risk not having her as an option in the future). She did recommend another teacher.

Funny, DC teacher sent out an email to the class offering her tutoring services over the summer. I thought she was an awful teacher, and thought about reporting her but wasn't sure it was against the rules. Dh convinced me to drop it, but nice to know I could have.

Unless DC was in some sort of multi age or looping class, and will have the teacher again next year, this would have been acceptable, tacky, but not against the rule. The rule is designed to keep a teacher from creating business for herself by giving bad grades and then insisting she must tutor your kid to help them "improve". So by the end of the school year/summer this would no longer be a concern.

It's not acceptable if you are using FCPS email to drum up private business.

I wonder how much the teachers charge per hour in general?
Anonymous
We paid $50/hr - 1 hr a week

Second grade teacher for my rising 3rd grader $30 hr 1 hour per week for tutoring in reading and writing. Worth every penny, she's great.

$25-$30 per hour seems reasonable.

Can you provide the teacher's contact info? Since FCPS endorses it, it should be ok with her as well. Can you please post her contact info if she agrees for this?

Sorry, she told me she has all the students that she needed. This how I found out about her...The teacher told someone in our community that she was available for tutoring this summer. During the last week of school, without the teachers knowledge the person sent out an e-mail to everyone in our school community that this teacher was available. She told me was so surprised about all the e-mails she received. She felt bad because she was going have to turn away people. She told me she did not want to put her availablity on the FCPS website, because she only wanted to stay within our school community. I was not looking for a tutor, but thought it would nice to give my kid some summer enrichment. At first I asked my kids current teacher who told me she was not available this summer. My kids teacher then told the other teacher what my kid needed to improve. It's great having a FCPS teacher as a tutor. I may keep this up in the fall. A couple of years I did use one of the tutors from the FCPS website. It was actually one of my other kids former teachers. Before that also used a speech therapist from that list as well. Maybe you can also check with your school office and find out if any teachers are available for tutoring. Good Luck!
