Found eligible for AAP Level IV, but staying at Base School?

Anonymous
Has anyone decided to keep their kid in their base school without a local level IV? Do you think you made the right decision?

We are keeping our oldest daughter at our base school even though she was accepted to the center. She has a lot of anxiety and really likes to take her time to do things, so we didn't think a faster pace would be good for her at this point. I feel good about our decision (even though our younger daughter will be starting at the center next year -- she has a completely different personality and I think it will be a good fit).

Yes, for the language immersion program.

I have three that stayed at their base schools for immersion (all three qualified for LL IV) and we haven't regretted it. All three are fluent (or almost - youngest still working on it) in a new language, and all three are still progressing nicely in their various grades. Oldest in MS just scored VERY well on her SOL's - two 600's and a 540 on the 7th grade math, and she is learning a ton. MS is a so much better place to differentiate, while ES is a great place to grow and explore without pressure. My oldest is learning the same thing the other MS AAP kids are learning, but she also knows a second language now. If your ES offers something different or special then that might be a good option. If we were at a different ES then I might not consider it, but ours offers so much more than just academic enrichment.

Anyone else especially who's base school doesn't have language immersion program?

Yes. I spoke to parents of children who went to our center from our base and from what I heard, I didn't think it would be the right fit for my son. So he didn't go. He never even knew it was being considered. I have not regretted that decision.

7/8 and 7/9 posters: my family is moving to area. Currently, our oldest is in immersion and gifted program in our current State. We are lookingto buy home so our child can continue immersion but are on fence because it seems we will have to choose between immersion and Level IV school. Of course, we are making assumption that child will qualify. Our child currently receives both in our State. Hate to have to choose between both programs. Given the fact that you had to choose, tells me that you are satisfied with the level of academic rigor in your child's immersion school. We are considering Ravensworth, London Towne or aurel Ridge. Any feedback on these or other immersion school, would be REALLY appreciated. I am an amateur on this form and not surd how to receive replies so was wondering if you wojld be so kind ad to emakl me: EstherOrtizLaw@yahoo.com. Thanks!,

Level IV is immersion. It is a full 5 days/week gifted magnet program. 3-5 elementary schools feed into a single gifted center school. The class is together for math, science, social studies and language arts. There is some differntiating within this dedicated gifted class in subjects like math (for the kids who are wickedly smart) For other classes like PE, art, music, etc the grade level classes are all mixed together.

local level IV is not a dedicated gifted program. There are kids in the class who qualified for the gifted center school (but choose not to switch to a new school) high performing kids who just missed qualifying for the gifted program, and other smart kids who did not qualify for services that the principal selects to put into the class.

What language is your child studying for immersion? It appears at least one immersion school that also has Local Level IV provides both AAP and immersion:
