Ideas for what to bring for lunch given pregnancy diet restrictions?

Anonymous
Now that I can't eat deli meat or tuna, I'm running out of ideas of things to bring for lunch at work. I don't have a microwave at work, which limits leftovers, etc. Hummas sandwiches are getting pretty old! What do others bring for lunch that's quick and easy to make in the morning?

pb& j, salad, chicken salad, cheese sandwich,

I munched on salad a lot - put a slab of chicken on top, cheese (low fat of course), some croutons, and I had a restaurant-type salad ready in minutes.

I craved a lot of peanut butter (creamy) and jelly sandwiches too. You'll have people and docs telling you not to consume peanuts during preg (and while nursing), but we have no food allergy history and I didn't find out about this "taboo" food until after I delivered (my doc. wasn't very thorough about telling me what to eat & not eat). And yes, me and baby were fine even though I ate pb&J sandwiches.

You can have canned tuna twice a week. Also, not all docs agree on the avoiding deli meat thing. My practice says deli meat is fine.

I often replace deli meats with avocado, hard boiled eggs (or egg sandwich), BLTs...

I understand it's okay to eat deli meat once heated, so at home I have heated roast beed and ham up on the stove and made a "melt" type sandwhich. That doesn't really help OP, but it's so yummy.

I also bring egg salad and pbj sandwhiches alot.

About the salads - I thought I read that raw vegtables can also have listeria in them like deli meat. I'm not usually fanatical about these kinds of things, but I have only eaten cooked veggies, so not many salads.

I bring various types of lentils, bean and quinoa salads. I just make a big batch Sunday night and then have it for the week. My favorite is a black bean and quinoa salad that I found on epicurious. Yum...and very healthy!

Instead of tuna salad you can make chicken salad with canned chicken (in the same grocery aisle as the canned tuna). You can also make a salad and put in whatever leftover meat you have from dinner. I also like salads with chickpeas, canned corn, and chopped bell peppers. For sides, I liked cheese sticks, granola bars, fresh fruit, and baby carrots. I'd bring a whole bunch of little items, already chopped up, and munch throughout the day.

I also ate lunch meat through two pregnancies. Really I think the risk is overblown. Both of my OBs said it was fine.

Same here. I ate sushi sometimes, too, though, so don't listen to me.

Yep, me too - everything in moderation.

I craved indian lentils and ate them almost daily at lunch for most of the 2nd trimester (which is also good on the protien, folic acid, and fiber front). If you are feeling lazy, they have canned or pouch indian food in the international section of the grocery store for $2-$4 a serving. works great with instant rice or pita. The indian spices help prevent it from making you all bloated too.

I had lunch meat, cured meats and unpasturized cheese. (Eee Gads!) Of course, my doctor advice to me as I left for Italy in my 16th week was that I should remember that Italian women have healthy babies all the time and they eat mozzarella, proscuito and - gasp - wine throughout their pregnancies.

But, if you don't WANT those things, then how about making yourself a bunch of chicken breasts on Sunday and using them for sandwiches, wraps and salads. As we enter fall, soups and stews are another great choice. Make a big batch on the weekend and microwave all week.

Same here. Sushi was actually one of the few things I wanted when I was pg, so I had it quite a bit.
