What does sessions being merit based mean?

Merit based = based on skill

Truth is it is very hard to determine skills and merit from a couple of large ID sessions. These sessions tend to favor players who are able to be on the ball the most and the physical ones. When a coach knows a player and has seen their body of work over time, they know about their work ethic, how they treat teammates, how coachable they are, how their parents behave.

Not really. My kid is rail thin skinny and not the biggest and he was on the ball constantly--and shields it extremely well.

Some of the bigger kids were dribbling into the ground, not completing any passes and getting knocked off the ball.

But this is in your eyes. Coaches might think otherwise.

Oh definitely. And they don't always select for the same type of players. And there are team 'needs' too. I'm very astute at picking talent (not talking about my own kids either--though I'm very critical of them). I played and was raised as a coach's kid. I have an 18-year old and the kids from young age that he played with and against--and many on very low teams early on--some are DC United Academy, Chicago and D1 rides now.

A lot of those kids were overlooked in the early years.

Coaches (appears to favor Brave) will augment teams with a few players. There were a decent of outside club players that looked real good, and didnt get much of a look.

Crazy number of boys at all age group tryouts last night.

Top players were on one field, the rest on other fields.

It was raining for the 08G too on Monday, not sure what the colors was all about
brave kids yellow pennys, Union kids red pennys.. new kids no pennys.. it’s unfortunate but there will be politics while forming teams. They will likely not select the best kids. Just too many boys. Hard to eval in rain and short sided fields

Brave kids were all in Red pinnies. You have it backwards.
not for 07/06..

12's, 10's and 08's all have offers going out. Heavy on the Brave side for the older two age groups. McLean either holding out or MV making a stand for his own.

What does that mean? And the Vienna/BRYC players were clearly seen as stronger than McLean right?

When an artist and a non artist look at a painting, they see different things.
Experienced quality knowledgeable scouts and coaches sees what the uneducated (in soccer) don't see at ID sessions.

The Union 10G just beat Brave 10G 7-2 in the fall, so no.
