What does sessions being merit based mean?

Merit based = based on skill

How is a tryout based on skill?

Curious to know the caliber of MLS Next players at an ECNL team tryout

Do really think there is much of a skill gap between an avg MLS Nxt vs a ECNL? Both of my kids play mls teams several times a year including DCU and have yet to win or loose by more than a goal. Come on SYC coach, you scared?

Between the Average MLS Next player and ECNL player, no. Probably no significance.

Only a head in the sand individual would deny the higher overall quality of MLS Next over ECNL
So unless you are on a poor club like Achilles or at Alexandria as the 25th player on the roster, going to ECNL is an interesting move.

Which ECNL team in the DMV is on the same level as DCU?
Not saying there isn't, I just don't know it.

But the girls side seems to be saying the same evil geniuses sit there meekly while Brave coaches only take their girls leaving McLean girls to fend for themselves.
And I’m not sure has 2 nights of rain been part of the conspiracy.
Is it an angry JW? a plotting JA? who controls the weather in this elaborate scheme???

That is only 2008 on the girls' side. Both teams are good. It just happens that half will be cut. The Brave coach is leading the team. There is a conspiracy that the Brave coach is bringing his whole team
Brave parents think their kids are better since they are already on the team.

None of this is true. There is no conspiracy to bring the whole team. Yes, the Brave 08s are stronger, but the Union 09s are stronger. They’re going to choose the best kids for each year.

I can’t believe how many people fall for trolls on this forum.

Just like the merger is not going to happen

Would still suck for many but would give clubs, coaching staff(s) and more importantly families more time to figure out what is best for them.

I agree 100% but that would mean they'd actually care about the kids...

true but multiple reasons why. Last weekend was a show case 3 games. And most the older boys had games at 5pm. They add that that team is unlikely to add new boys. Vs a merger of chaos. So boys think they have a better shot

I agree with this. It sucks for everyone though even for the ones on the lower ages...

Anny offers?

Seems head coaches will have the upper hand and will pick most their players. So, it all depends who your coach is.

I have teen sons at ECNL and MLSNext. Without a doubt--MLSNext is much higher speed of play and tougher games. Playing Red Bulls, Atlanta United, etc. in MLSNext. Maybe not in the younger years--but at U18/19 it is a BIG difference.

Merit based = based on skill

Truth is it is very hard to determine skills and merit from a couple of large ID sessions. These sessions tend to favor players who are able to be on the ball the most and the physical ones. When a coach knows a player and has seen their body of work over time, they know about their work ethic, how they treat teammates, how coachable they are, how their parents behave.

Not really. My kid is rail thin skinny and not the biggest and he was on the ball constantly--and shields it extremely well.

Some of the bigger kids were dribbling into the ground, not completing any passes and getting knocked off the ball.

Coaches (appears to favor Brave) will augment teams with a few players. There were a decent of outside club players that looked real good, and didnt get much of a look.

It was raining for the 08G too on Monday, not sure what the colors was all about
brave kids yellow pennys, Union kids red pennys.. new kids no pennys.. it’s unfortunate but there will be politics while forming teams. They will likely not select the best kids. Just too many boys. Hard to eval in rain and short sided fields

Bashing Alexandria? Their 08 just defeated Delco over the weekend. Hate is real in this place.

Also--anyone with soccer IQ can read the off the ball movement. The kids constantly moving into space, making the runs--not drawing players towards their teammates, etc.

But this is in your eyes. Coaches might think otherwise.
