Let's play a game. I'm giving you $3m

Where would you buy/build a house in the DC area?

Personally I'd buy that land on klingle and build a fabulous house surrounded by trees but still in the hear of the city. Alas that property has been sold and I'd never be able to afford t anyway.

Or a ultra modern condo in Penn quarter.

Top floor at the Newseum building.

Awe ... I was gonna say get the flock out of here.

I'd keep my house in SS and add a 2nd level with a master suite. I'd consider buying or renting an apt downtown for during the week to reduce my commute, but then my kids would have a commute to school.

I would buy an $800,000ish house around/in Fairfax City and I would buy a nice beach house in one of the DE beach towns -- budget $500Kish. I would take the rest and buy a small place in NYC or in Vegas or someplace fun.

Gut and remodel my existing house in Bethesda, maybe spend close to 800K.

Also, a small, modest place in Rehoboth, maybe in The Pines.

Invest any balance in education, savings, laser hair removal.

Do we have to use the $3M on real estate? If not, I'd probably pay off my mortgage (about $700,000) and put the rest for savings and private school tuition.

If the $3M must go to real estate, I'd either (a) stay in my current home in Chevy Chase, but buy a weekend farm near Middleburg/the Plains or (b) buy a bigger house in CC.

I would update and professionally decorate my home in Brookeville and buy a vacation home in Bethany...and I would quit my job and be a SAHM.

Hmmm....

We just bought a historic house in Arlington which I love. We only moved in a week ago and I wouldn't move out for anything. I would use about 100K of the money to gut the kitchen, buy new furniture, put up plantation shutters, etc.

My in-laws already have a beach house so I wouldn't buy another and I hate skiing so that is off the table. I might think about buying a small apt. in Paris, though...

What's leftover would go into the college fund, to charity, to the emergency fund, and to the travel abroad fund.

Bethesda, near Old Courthouse close to some shops / playground.

But I wouldn't spend $3 mill.

Move away somewhere, take $600,000 or so to build a house/buy land and invest the rest so I have a nice retirement fund and college fund for the kids.
