Another parent who needs help, both emotionally and possibly physically to get down from that giant soapbox |
| Half the teachers in my NW DC school have refused to show up due to childcare or medical accommodation, despite day cares/babysitters being available and vaccinations fully available. |
|
"Jaqueline Pogue Lyons, president of the Washington Teachers’ Union, said that if some students need to be able to do school virtually, teachers will too, and the city should allow it."
This is from Sunday's WaPo: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/dc-schools-fall-in-person/2021/05/30/58d8145e-bef1-11eb-83e3-0ca705a96ba4_story.html So, yes, parents can and should blame the teachers unions. They are not hiding what they are doing. And the mayor is at fault if she allows them to continue to use a pandemic that poses a vanishingly small risk to kids and no risk to vaccinated adults as a means to refuse to do their jobs in person. |
|
YES. We blame the WTU, the mayor and the hapless, stepping on rakes chancellor for what you did to thousands of D.C.'s children over the past year and a half.
And then you want to talk about EQUITY. |
Ok, well, when you don't address the substance of the argument and just do these dumb ad hominem attacks, it just shows everyone that you can't dispute the point. |
|
For all of the people who say they are teachers posting on here that they are back in person, you are still the minority:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/washington-schools-in-person-numbers/2021/05/30/b7974f60-bf9f-11eb-9c90-731aff7d9a0d_story.html More than half of DC's students haven't been in a classroom since last March. This is why parents are angry and feel betrayed by their local leaders and the union. Setting aside the massive learning loss of the past year for these students, it's also worth noting the rising number of crimes committed by juveniles while schools have been closed: https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/carjackings-by-juveniles-soar-in-dc-area/2623379/ |
the number of kids on antidepressants now is off the charts. |
omfg. I hope Bowser is prepared to shoot this down or create a virtual rubber room for these teachers. They should not be staffed for any classroom roles. |
Sounds like their parents should be caring for them instead of posting constantly to DCUM venting about WTU. Just saying… |
wow, that article is very concerning - and biased since it does not quote any parents or teachers who are happy back in person. I find it extremely extremely concerning that KIPP is planning for up to 15% to remain remote. This is just shocking malfeasance for DC. There is zero evidence that kids are more at risk in school than at home. It’s no different healthwise for kids than flu season. I hope to see more leadership on this from pediatricians. It’s absurd that they are tiptoeing around parents “fears” instead of dispelling fears. |
| This situation is just so, so sad. My kid will be back in school FT because he goes to a high SES school where parents almost uniformly want kids back; and I have the knowledge and resources to advocate for him, and to read and understand research. My kid will be OK - meanwhile apparently thousands of black kids will remain virtual because we are not communicating effectively with their parents about health risks. Talk about systemic racism. |
| Just settle down. People are still dying and only 50 percent of the population is vaccinated. You people in upper NW have an entirely different existence than the rest of the city and you prove it on this site every day. You don't know everything and stop blaming worker organizations that are mostly comprised of women of color for your own weird preconceptions and slated view of the world. |
| Why is this thread even a thing? Who cares if people are still blaming the union? Like it matters |
so I’m not supposed to care that black kids in SE have dramatically worse access to education than my kid? makes sense. |
Well there are better ways to show you care then yelling on this site. Here’s two off the top of my head 1) Send letters to your public officials; they are the ones who make decisions. 2) if your school has a well funded PTA, try and see if there are ways to share that many around the city. Schools WOTP typically have multiple positions funded by PTA that schools in SE can’t afford. Similar with technology. |
