UVA has more than 5x the enrollment of West Point. So obviously you know more of them in VA. I'm not from VA and West Point is far more prestigious than UVA IMHO. It's free, requires Congressional nomination and you know the grads are disciplined and smart!

Pp here. Of course West Point is more prestigious than UVA. I’m from NY and some of the best students went to West Point. I’m just saying some average joe who is not ivy bound or never would be in the pool to apply may be unfamiliar with West Point or Penn. anyone in VA does know uva and considers it a top school kid here the smart kids from their high school go.

UVA is way more prestigious than West Point

*snort*
This is the most boostering UVA booster that ever boosted.

How about this: have your child apply to both UVA and West Point (assuming they can get a nomination) and report back as to where they are admitted.

How about this: If there are only two schools in the USA, UVA and West Point, which one do you think it would be harder to get in.

And…..UVA boosters all come off looking like dude bros instead of the intellectual powerhouses they think they are. Are you actually trying to hurt UVA’s reputation? Because it’s a really ugly look.

West Point. Before you can even submit an application, you have to do a few things:

Get a medical clearance -- you're disqualified if you can't achieve 20/20 vision; if you have food allergies; if you've been medicated for depression or anxiety; if you have eczema or asthma; if you have a 504 or IEP; or any number of other conditions (bedwetting, scoliosis, ACL reconstruction; heart abnormalities; many more.) So this already narrows the pool of candidates.

After that: secure a nomination from your Congressman or State Senator (or the VP.) Every member of Congress can nominate 5 people. Great if you're in a state that isn't densely populated but pretty tough if you're in NoVa, MD, NJ, etc. The nomination process itself is an application that requires 3 LORs, transcripts, test scores, and essays.

Then, once you get the nomination and apply, the admissions rate is under 10%.

So yes -- West Point is harder to get into. For my son, who had heart surgery two years ago, the chance of him being admitted is roughly zero.

If there were only two schools, UVA acceptance rate would be 0.000000000000001% while WP would be 0.000001%
All the students would be Olympics level athletes.

There are already plenty of physically fit high achieving kids in UVA with 1500 SAT
The applicant pool is very small for WP so that its SAT average is barely 1300

As far as test scores go, UVA is test optional and West Point is not, so of course UVA will have higher test scores.

If kids who took Adderall and were permitted extra time on standardized tests were allowed to apply to West Point, the average test score would probably be higher.

Check the scores before it was optional.
Not much change.

Respect for the service academies, but other high ranked schools are filled with all sorts of varsity sports athletes so enough of the physical stuff.
No need to hype it up.
