UVA has more than 5x the enrollment of West Point.    So obviously you know more of them in VA.  I'm not from VA and West Point is far more prestigious than UVA IMHO.  It's free, requires Congressional nomination and you know the grads are disciplined and smart![/quote]

Pp here. Of course West Point is more prestigious than UVA. I’m from NY and some of the best students went to West Point. I’m just saying some average joe who is not ivy bound or never would be in the pool to apply may be unfamiliar with West Point or Penn. anyone in VA does know uva and considers it a top school kid here the smart kids from their high school go.[/quote]

West Point. Before you can even submit an application, you have to do a few things:

Get a medical clearance -- you're disqualified if you can't achieve 20/20 vision; if you have food allergies; if you've been medicated for depression or anxiety; if you have eczema or asthma; if you have a 504 or IEP; or any number of other conditions (bedwetting, scoliosis, ACL reconstruction; heart abnormalities; many more.) So this already narrows the pool of candidates.

After that: secure a nomination from your Congressman or State Senator (or the VP.) Every member of Congress can nominate 5 people. Great if you're in a state that isn't densely populated but pretty tough if you're in NoVa, MD, NJ, etc. The nomination process itself is an application that requires 3 LORs, transcripts, test scores, and essays.

Then, once you get the nomination and apply, the admissions rate is under 10%.

So yes -- West Point is harder to get into. For my son, who had heart surgery two years ago, the chance of him being admitted is roughly zero.
