Ward 6 Middle Schools

Just like at Brent, I don't see the SWS kids going anywhere but Latin, BASIS or private. You can't make anyone go anywhere -- you need to make it attractive, and this is the problem with the discussion with test-in, honors, etc. That of programming is attractive to the high SES families that CHCSPO and DCPS ignore on the Hill, yet want their money, resources and test-score-raising children.

I love the frequency with which this argument appears on DCUM. "going private" costs a lot of money. It ain't as easy as just typing the words.

There are a lot of people on the Hill who can afford private.

So, DCPS is going to go from three MS in the Hill to two, with one of those mostly SES, which would be kind blatantly segregating by SES (a political hot buttion, esp if it is as the expense of OOB students from W7 and W8) mostly so Eastern can be more fully utilized? Assuming all the kids from the "good" Hill MS go on to Eastern, even though Eastern will still be fed by the "bad" MS as well?

If I were DCPS (or a pol with influence) I am not sure I would take the heat for major change with such an uncertain upside.

Aren't we supposed to be building "neighborhood schools?" Why should Ward 7 and 8 OOB students be a priority at all in a discussion about Ward 6 middle schools?

Oh, I think DCPS will happily let schools shift to neighborhood schools on their own, as demographics shift. I just don't see them doing massive, visible changes to get there.

If anything, they will continue to rise as development progresses south of the Freeway (e.g., Whole Foods, etc.) i haven't seen any suppression of prices of homes IB for schools like LT at which high-SES families have eschewed except for PK. I mean, seriously, take a look at prices for homes IB for Tyler or Payne. Location, location, location.

That's hilarious. Are you aware that a Whole Foods is going to open 2 blocks north of LT? You know, right down the street from the new Giant. And the other new massive mixed use. And have you looked at the IB numbers for LT for 1st? or 2nd? Brent is a great school and a great neighborhood. But are you aware there are other neighborhoods that are on an upswing? I do agree that the real estate will always be available...all those Brent families need to sell after 5th grade!

??? No Brent parent will ever need to sell. Brent is the feeder for Latin and Basis. Brent will take all of the seats thru sibling preference. It's the other Hill schools who have to worry about the lack of MS option.

I just checked the myschooldc website and you should call them. It doesn't list "Brent Families" under Lottery preferences. Neither does Latin! Just sibling. So that means that the people who have kids there won't have to sell, but your neighbors are calling realtors as I type. Unless sibling has a different meaning IB for Brent. Does it? Please illuminate the meaning in that rarified air.

You're making my argument for me. As a Brent booster/apologist the best defense for the atrocious feeder situation is...families that already have kids in a charter won't be harmed. I guess their's no "I" in Brent. I wouldn't know because neither my kids nor I were educated at Brent.

How long have you lived here? You seem out of touch. No, Brent is not a literal feeder to Latin or Basis. No, Brent families are not calling their realtors, unless it is to make a mint off of their million dollar houses.

I get that Capitol Hill is expensive all over, and I can understand why you might have a Brent chip on your shoulder if you bought an expensive house in bounds for a school like Ludlow-Taylor without realizing that all schools on the Hill are not yet on equal footing.

Not on equal footing? You're right, LT has higher CAS scores than Brent. Apparently the teacher quality is pretty equal.

The in boundary Brent parents I know are much happier with their elementary than the in boundary LT parents I know.

Well, very good for you. Welcome to the anecdotal-evidence-is-actual-data club. Your Brent statistics teacher would be embarrassed.

It's more fun to pick fights with the Cluster and CHPSPO than Ludlow Taylor.

Snark fail. Does LT or any other Hill ES have a statistics teacher?

PP, could you go and survey all the IB LT families with kids in First-Grades and then get back to us with the data? Shouldn't take too long with only 25 percent of the school being IB even without filtering out Ward 7, 8 and 9 cheaters.

I appreciate the anecdotal-evidence shot, but think the Brent stats teacher reference was a miss.

You risk looking foolish -- the IB stats are changing at LT as you type.

And go ahead an explain away how all these OB kids from Wards 7, 8, and 9 cheaters outscored the Brent stundents on the most recent DC CAS.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you love Brent, but don't act like it's the only decent option or that it's everybody's preference despite what "IB parents you know" tell you.

...because Brent does not "teach to the test" ....don't you know?

I know a mom there who said her PRESCHOOLER had literally been singing the DC CAS song in their bath tub at home. Sounds very well-rounded.

You're not exactly convincing me. Are you aware that "as you type" consists of words which have a literal meaning? Was there a sudden influx of IB kids at the time that qyou posted this? No one ever said that Brent was the only "decent" option. I would also recommend digging much deeper into the CAS results by subgroup and class before drawing too many sweeping conclusions.
