Okay, so where is DS/DD going to go to college next fall?

Is this sarcastic or have you really never heard of Boston College? You're like the PP who had never heard of Scripps...you guys need to do some serious research before you and your kids head into the college application process!

Not the PP, but calm down. BC has certainly come up in the world, but it is not in the same league as the Claremont Colleges.

I don't know about that, especially for people living on the east coast. I find it very difficult to believe that anyone who lives in DC or the surrounding area has never heard of Boston College.

Come on - it's a great school and very well-known.

Sure, if you say so.

I'm the OP. Yes, my ds is going to Boston College. I am surprised that people haven't heard of it, but it was his first choice, so we are happy. However, I can't believe how mean some people are on this board. I would never poke fun at someone's child's college choice. What a mean-spirited, narrow-minded little person you must be (the person/people who made disparaging comments about it). I hope your child is a kinder/nicer person than his/her parents.

You are embarrassed for not knowing a well-known college and you feel you have to strike back with sarcasm. Sad. I hope your kid is better informed than you are. Same with the poster who never heard of Scripps or the Claremont Colleges.

So many assholes on this thread.

Congratulations to all the kids who have been accepted to college! Please ignore the fools who have never heard of Boston College or Scripps and think it is funny to make a joke about their own ignorance.

Boston College and Scripps are both good schools!

Great school, academics, lots of different social outlets for all different types of students, nice campus, wonderful city!

I am so glad to see this. DS applied there as his 'safety' and it turned out to be one of the few schools who accepted him. He is choosing between three, all OOS, and really leaning toward UW-Madison. It is so far away from here that I literally cry every time I think about him going there (not in front of him, of course). The funny thing is that I encouraged him to go out of state the whole time he was in high school. Now that he is heading that direction, I am freaking. I'll deal with it though, and glad to see posts like this!

UW Madison has an excellent reputation around the world. Over 1/3 of the students from OOS. It is reasonably priced for OOS students - tuition+board about $35,000. Strong academics, amazing sports, thriving arts and music scene, lots of shops and restaurants, outdoor recreation, and two beautiful lakes. It really is a solid all around college experience where anyone can fit in.

LOL. Very few people on a easy coast know the Claremont colleges - they are regional.

I've always known about Claremont colleges, and I'm from the East Coast. If you spent more than several seconds looking at colleges in California, you would have heard of them. If you looked at colleges entirely on the East Cost, it still surprises me that you haven't heard of the Claremont colleges -- they are very well known in my circles, and excellent schools too.

Boston College is very hard to get into these days. Back in my day it was a safety school, but then so was Vandy and Wash U. Now both are very competitive, as is BC.

UW Madison is a great school, PP. If it was your DS's safety, don't worry that it's a second rate school because it isn't. Madison is a great place to be a college student, a wonderful college town with lots of opportunities. It also happens to be the state capital, so there's always lots going in there and at the university. It's cold, so send him to school with lots of warm clothes! It's only a 2-hour plane ride away, so he won't be that far away. You'll survive, and he'll be very happy and get a great education.

Hampton University, private but affordable so we are happy.

Don't worry about him in Madison. It is a nice sized city with everything he needs right near the campus- grocery stores, restaurants, entertainment, 4 hospitals. You can hop on a plane and be there in 2 hours.
