I'm a Maclaren owner, those Bugaboos are so cool looking. I do notice but would never spend that kind of money on a stroller but then again I adopted two kids internationally that came home a bit older so stroller use was limited. If I had more than one child from infancy and could afford one, I probably would have bought one because it would be used a great deal
One can purchase one on the consignment market too. |
Here's twist -the ONLY reason I didn't get a BB is because I didn't want to be judged. I was all set to get one then heard too many snarky comments about BB owners from more sensible moms so I immediately felt guilty and got a less expensive although still high end stroller. I love my stroller but would have also loved a
Bug. But these are the same moms who spend boatloads of money on a houseful of plastic crap rather than limiting themselves to a few quality toys like I do. To each their own. |
14:47, it's relevant because an earlier poster commented that you can't tell how much money your friends have. |
I still drive the car my parent's gave me when I turned 16. That was 15 years ago. We also have another ancient car that was in DH's family. We have the Orbit and love it. We never spent money on cars, we were given the down payment on our house as a gift from our parents. We save, save, save. So I don't get the debt to high-end stroller correlation. I think it is too easy to link debt to anything flashy/high-end, which is BS.
Love the Orbit. Wish we had gotten a Bugaboo. We have now spent over $1600 for the toddler seat, toddler car seat, extra base... FML. Now it doesn't fold easily and isn't half as light, and takes up my whole trunk with the toddler seat. I would stick with the car seat system, though, AMAZING features. |
I can't help but cringe when people refer to their stroller by the cutesy nickname of "bug".... |
We are cheap and have a $20 umbrella stroller, even though we make over $240K a year. For Christmas, I'm going to get myself a low-end Maclaren, because I want the basket underneath for DS's toys, and I want something that steers a little better so I can drink coffee while I push. |
Particularly those who brag about how "hiighly educated" they are. This is an anonymous board and you can tell us that you are anything you wish and you have to prove nothing. |
May this thread Rest in Peace. |
Seeing as how the conversation is all over the map here, can I just mention how much I hate the Phil & Ted's bitch seat? I don't know who thinks this is a good idea, but I cringe every time I see a poor kid jammed into one of those things. |
Me too!!! But the kids don't seem to mind. |
My kids always hated it. Now that I think about it, maybe they just wanted a Bugaboo instead.... ![]() |
PP, I would never in a million years depend on what people TELL you they make. If you see someone with a cheap stroller and a NICE house, yeah, they're probably doing much better than anyone would expect. They probably have nothing to prove, as well.
OTOH, if you see someone with an okay house and an amazing stroller, chances are you can guess how they do, economically. Probably not as well as they would like you to believe. Very few people I know CHOOSE to live in a smaller or lesser house for the hell of it. Many I know CHOOSE a "lesser" stroller because doing so is part of their long term savings plan. Some call it prioritizing. |

Dude, where did you get a pic of my Uncle Chas? |
We live in a lesser of a house - and we do all of our own work so we can save for retirement and our son's college fund... I got the stroller I wanted - an umbrella - nothing to do with price - we wanted to know if we both lost our jobs we could pay our mortgage on one salary (which happened) or get two low paying jobs and be ok. We don't need or want a huge house to take care of and we want it easily paid off by the time we retire. We could afford a new car but why - our old one works well and who is to say a new one will not give us problems - my car we bought new gave us non-stop problems for the first several years so we'd rather save the money so when my husband's dies (or mine first which is much newer) we can get one with a decent down payment or pay for it all. You can't tell anything by the way we live... except our child is our priority. |
