Grocery Prices Are Out Of Control

I also posted that due to high grocery prices,I now do a partial shop at aldi’s. What I recommend:
Clementines, Cara Cara oranges, mangoes, avocados, peppers (yellow and red) assorted berries (strawberries, blackberries and raspberries) omg pineapple is so inexpensive! Really all of their fruits and vegetables.
Cherry tomatoes
Bananas
Cantaloupe
Garlic knots
Marinara sauce
Not a fan of sweets but their cookies taste exactly like Girl Scout ones
It’s also fun to walk down the aisle of shame, scored a pretty floral cast iron braiser and Opalex Shampoo dupe
It’s a sad state of affairs when your local supermarket is pricing you out, and I only walk into Whole Foods for chicken.

Another interesting fact is that they are the same family as Trader Joe’s.

I did try Aldi for awhile but in all honesty some of the swaps are not worth it. The coffee was terrible and not strong enough, I felt like I was brewing tree bark. The cheese tastes like nothing. I’d buy blocks of cheddar to shred for things like tacos and chili and the cheddar had zero flavor, it was just like rubber. So unfortunately even though it’s less expensive it’s still sometimes not the better option. I will say things like chips and crackers and chocolate are worth getting there though.
I'm a big fan of Aldi but I echo your statements. The coffee, while cheap, is sub standard. They used to have a wide selection of whole beans but not anymore. The cheese is a real mystery. No flavor at all. But, that authentic, dark German chocolate is pretty awesome.

+1, especially to the bolded. One of the reasons I don't go to Aldi often is that they really lack some items I consider basic, and the produce quality at my location is generally pretty poor (I know that's not the case everywhere). I hate having to stop at multiple stores to get weekly groceries.

But the whole point is if you have to do any or all of these to get back to prices you thought were reasonable a couple of years ago, the prices are overall up.

Yes, I can get cheaper bread or meat or orange juice or whatever else if I go to Aldi or buy a no name brand, but just a few years back I didn’t have to do that to spend a reasonable amount on groceries.

And of course, it all ignores the fact that most of DCUM can take the hit in prices or, at worst, do the shopping hacks to bring prices down a bit. But the bulk of the world outside of DCUM already shopped for sales, off brand, discount grocers etc. So they don’t have a lower tier to go down to.

+1. Well put.

I wonder where the smug posters went? Poster 1 that denies price increases, and Poster 2 that is like "just change your buying habits or grow your own"

A case of garbage domestic lager (Coors, Miller) is THIRTY DOLLARS. I lived on $30 a week in college in the late 90s.

Two years ago, the chips were $6, and the carrots and radishes were routinely $0.99.

What the hell is actually going on? Where is the money going?

NYT reporting today that beer at home is up 3% just in the last year and beer at restaurants/bars is up 3.5%.

Which is total BS because every single outlet for the last 5 years has been going on and on about how the current 20-40 year old crowd doesnt even really drink anymore. Beer sales fell off a cliff, so why hasnt the price dropped?

Inflation is rising.
Wages are not keeping up.
Unemployment rising.
War is not stopping
Pedophiles are still in office with con men.

Next up Mike Johnson said Republicans are coming for your Social Security and Medicare. Think you will be able to buy groceries then?

Aldi is nipping at the heels of big chain stores. Yes, I will go to those for other basics and my coffee brand is non negotiable- I just find Starbucks/Peet’s cheaper at target. No I don’t need 20 different tomato sauces to choose from. By offering a no frills shopping, without advertising, unnecessary redundancy- the aldi method is on to something - especially to those that need to budget. I do my fruit/veg shopping there once a week.

Crackers (which I don’t really buy, but noticed) are $6/box. Bread is $8/loaf. Eggs are $12 for a dozen. We pay $8-$9 for half a gallon of organic milk.

Sure. Jumbo eggs at Giant this week ~4.00

I grew up with a thrifty mom who liked to go to multiple stores due to sales, so it's kind of ingrained in me. I can hit an Aldi, Trader Joe's, and a supermarket in 90 minutes first thing in the morning and get all my shopping done for the week. Costco is a monthly trip.

Trump today: "I love inflation"

Literally. That is his response, when asked about rising inflation and prices.

His moronic cult followers will say it's taken out of context.
