Grocery Prices Are Out Of Control

Anonymous
I just got back from my weekly grocery trip at the Giant in Potomac Yard. A bag of Stacy's pita chips was $11. Conventional Giant brand baby carrots were $3. Radishes were $3 a bunch. A case of garbage domestic lager (Coors, Miller) is THIRTY DOLLARS. I lived on $30 a week in college in the late 90s.

Two years ago, the chips were $6, and the carrots and radishes were routinely $0.99.

What the hell is actually going on? Where is the money going?

OP here- I shop at Lidl and Aldi all thetime for certain things but Giant is still where I go for a lot of the things we eat. And Aldi's prices have risen like crazy on the things I buy there- fruit and nuts mostly.

Transportation costs are up and fewer people to pick produce.

Wait - hold up-- a bag of Stacy's pita chips was $11? A case of Coors is $30?

That's insane. Holy crap. I will be honest that I have not been paying that much attention to grocery prices, but this cannot be real.

If I had to guess why, it is because we are in a stupid, pointless war that has driven up the cost of gasoline, and well, pretty much everything.

Thanks Trump.

Maybe Trump's ICE escalation has resulted in increased labor costs -- like farmers paying more than illegal-below-minimum-wage payments to vulnerable workers -- for things like your radishes?

Carrots are 1.50 at Safeway.

Thanks Trump.

It's 100 percent real. The chips were $10.90 and the beer was $28.99.

I was on Ocracoke Island July 4th of 2022, and distinctly remember buying a case of Bud at the General store for $14. It may have been a holiday sale, I don't know, but it was half what it is now 4 years later.

I believe you OP! I just checked Walmart.com and Stacys pita chips are $8-9.

Good grief. Not too long ago they were $3, max.

Agree. A few years ago we used to be a $300/week family and could do mostly organic for that, and now we’re at $450 for the same stuff.

Crackers (which I don’t really buy, but noticed) are $6/box. Bread is $8/loaf. Eggs are $12 for a dozen. We pay $8-$9 for half a gallon of organic milk.

I 100% noticed the Stacey’s prices too. My jaw dropped.

Where are you shopping. I use Walmart delivery and it’s not close to that.

Giant is so expensive! Its more expensive than almost any other store. And the quality is crap. I don't know how they stay in business.
