If you go as far as Forest hills geographically and socially then you might as well make the move to Westchester. It’s not really The City (TM) |
Actually, Ballston is denser. Density is not necessarily a good thing. |
That’s a recipe for ending up lifelong renters. That’s a lot of money to spend on rent and it means that their end of year bonus will have to be saved for a down payment. The biggest financial mistake among NYC friends is not having the down payment saved for a coop before moving into an expensive rental/having children. A DP for a decent condo is often close to one million. You can’t save for that if you’re spending 9-10k a month on rent. |
As others have pointed out, the Reddit woman made a few long term financial mistakes. The big one is not getting in the home equity ladder earlier, as in a decade ago, when she started her real estate career. Even a studio with some sort of mortgage would have helped her avoid being a middle aged renter. |
I know this is off topic, but I think Forest Hills has good schools no? I think I would prefer it to Westchester. |
Go look at the map, the Red Hook projects are a good 15-20 minutes hike with a highway in the middle of it. Besides, there is no place in the walkable areas of NYC that is not within 15 minutes from some “undesirable” housing. |
Lol no it is not. And while I appreciate what NoVa has done for housing development Ballston is sooooo boring and dead compared to most any NYC neighborhood. There’s literally no comparison. |
I’m certain that’s true for any city … |
No idea really, had friends who lived there for a number of years, they seemed to like it. |
Such good food there … I dream of the Asian bakery fruit cream cakes. |
| Suggest op looks a bit harder at close in suburbs with housing for a family of five and within 1-1.5 hrs of Manhattan. I grew up in one of the most upscale communities in the US, about an hour from Manhattan where I have seen (online) many homes in th east 12 months in the $1.5-$1.8 range. Good schools so no need for private. Property taxes are not cheap...but they help pay for those good schools, and among various counties around NYC there are choices. |
You go live in Chicago and report back then |
Compared to the better schools in Westchester? No they’re not that good. They are run by the NYC board of education which handicaps them tremendously |
It’s not a death sentence. The life the Redditor wants is easily attainable there, she could buy a single family house in Lincoln Park rather easily |
It’s a seven minute walk from Red Hook East to the Dunkin in Carroll Gardens. There’s an army of criminals and sex offenders in that housing projects. Also keep in mind Carroll Gardens is a big step down from Brooklyn Heights and even Cobble Hill. |
